KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday evening. Prepent—The Mayor (Mr Blackwell) Ors. Smith, Woodford, Paraham, Moore, Pinching, Fraser, Mathews, and Stanton. The Mayor reported the result of an interview with Mr Bowen, M.H.R., relative to the Ferry reserve and Cemetery reserve.—Letters were road—From Albion Dramatic Club, asking for Council’s patronage at an entertainment shortly to be given. Or. Woodford moved, Cr. Pinching seconded—“ That the patronage be granted.” Or. Smith moved an amendment—“ That the Council decline to patronise the entertainment.” The motion was carried on division—Ayes, 5 ; noes, 2.—The surveyor’s report was read, stating the cost of footpath near Mr Talbot’s house would be from £l4 to £IS, which was agreed to. Unless something was decided respecting a new bridge he would urge on the Council to carry out repairs to the present one, which was unoafe for traffic. Consideration of this matter was deferred. He had purchased 160 ft wire rope for the bridge at a cost of 355. The householders on east side Black street, between Hilton and Baven streets, were willing to pay a third cost of a concrete channel, estimated to cost £34.—The receipts for the fortnight were £23. The overdraft at the Bank, £9l9slod.—Accounts, £l4 10s 4d, were passed. Cr. Pinching moved, Or. Mathews seconded latter of condolence bo addressed by the Mayor to Mrs Dudley on the death of Dr. Dudley, who had for many years taken an active part in the municipal affairs of the town.” The motion, which was spoken to by the Mayor, Cr, Moore, and other councillors, who referred to the services rendered to the town by the deceased gentleman, was put and carried, The Mayor reported that a felted, nearly waterproof tweed, suitable for fire brigade uniforms, had been made at the Kaiapoi Woollen Factory. The selling price of this was 5s 3d per yard, but the company would supply it in this instance for 4s 93. On the motion of Or. Pinching, seconded by Or. Smith, it was decided to purchase cloth for twenty-six suits, and that tenders, limited to ratepayers, be invited by next meeting.—On the motion of Or. Pinching, seconded by Or. Woodford, it was unanimously resolved that a hearly vote of thanks be accorded to Mr 0. 0. Bowen on his retirement from the representation of the district in the General Assembly. The Mayor and other members expressed their deep regret upon losing so energetic and valuable a representative.—Tenders wore accepted for metalling Akaroa street and Beach road, the latter to be referred to tho Mandeville B.oad Board for approval.—The Council then adjourned.
