ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

A meeting of the council of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held at the Commercial Hotel on Wednesday afternoon last. , Present —Hon. J. T. Peacock (in the chair) Drs. Brittin and Prankish, Messrs J. Marshman, J. E. Hill, Stoddart, H. B. Webb, and p. J. Kimbell. It was decided to prolong the season for trout fishing till March Slat, that being the date to which the season extends in Otago. Mr J. B. Hill asked if there were any ti;out to spare, as there was a public stream on Messrs Walker and Ologstoun’s run in which they might bo properly liberated. It was replied that the fish could be supplied at the usual rate charged for places outside the district. Mr Stoddart asked if any application had been received from Motonau. The secretary replied that no formal application had been received. Dr. Prankish stated that 500 trout wore liberated last year in a stream et Motonau. Mr Stoddart suggested that free grants of trout should be made to the districts where there wore streams devoid of fieh, but it was decided to defer the consideration till later. An application for trout ova from Hokitika was replied to by the secretary, that it was now too late in the season, but a supply could be sent next season at the usual rates. Complaints wore made from the Ashburton district of the wholesale slaughter of hares and also the great prevalence of poaching. Applications for trout from Mesopotamia station, Ashburton, the Buller, and Temuka were also received. Mr 8. D. Barker wrote announcing that the seeds of sugar maple given him by the society had germinated, and the young trees were doing welh Mr O Q-. Tripp wrote asking for blackbirds and thrushes. It was decided to send the former, but the latter had not thriven in Canterbury. A letter from Mr Archibald Young, Edin. burgh, re a proposed International Fisheries Exhibition in that city in April, 1882, was referred to Dr. von Haast as the person most likely to take action in the matter. Several accounts were passed for payment.
