PEDESTRIANISM.
The contests for the Amateur Championships came off towards the end of July. There was some splendid running, and some extraordinary time was made for amateurs. The mile was done in 4min 243seca, The quarter-mile was run by Myers, the great American amateur, in 48 3 Bth seconds. In these, as vrell as in the seven-mile walking race, the four-mile race, the ten-mile race, the standard amateur time was beaten. The jumping too was exceptionally good. Both jumps were carried off by P. Dann ; [the high with a jump of 6ft. iin., and the long with 22ft, llin. Two grand performances. In the polo jumping T. Bay cleared lift. 3in., the best performance on record. The Eighty-five Hours’ Walking Match at Buffalo is ended. O'Leary covered 271 miles and flarriman 267.
