BOROUGH COUNCILS.
LYTTELTON. The usual meeting of this Oounoil was held on Monday night, when there were present— The Mayor (Mr Allwright, in the chair), and Ors. Maopherson, Macdonald, Stioson, Reed, Garfortb, Webb, Grubb, Bmith, Weyburne. The receipts since the preceding meeting were £SO 12s 2d. Two letters respecting the granting of a railway siding at Officers' Point were read from the Public Works office. The Publio Works Act expressly forbids any siding being leased for more than ten years. The communication was left with the estates oommittee to report upon. Mr Maxwell wrote, informing the Oounoil that the road to the Gladstone Pier from Norwioh Quay would be forthwith put in repair. Mr J. Burnett, of the Eailway Department, wrote, stating that the quantity of rails returned to the department by the borough was less than the quantity borrowed, and he therefore again sent in the acoount for the deficiency. The olerk was instructed to acknowledge receipt of the letter, and to state) that every foot of rails had been returned. Aocounts amount* ing to £95 12s 8d were possed for payment. The engineer at the pumping station sent in his report, and it was agreed to clean the reservoirs out. Mr F, D. Gibson was appointed returning officer for the borough vice Mr Byes, resigned. Or. Webb nominated Mr Chalmers. This was seconded pro forma by Or. Macdonald, but was lost, Or. Webb only votiDg aye. The dangerous port, of Dublin street, opposite the end of Winchester street, it was agreed to have repaired. Henry Buckley was appointed poundkeeper. The standing committees in existence last year were left intact for the ensuing year, with the exoeption of Or. Stinson being appointed on those committees formerly filled by ex-Or. Hawkins. At the instanoe of Or. Macpherson, it was agreed—" That a deputation wait on the Minister of Publio Works re the necessity for a footbridge to be erected across the railway, at the foot of Oxford street." The bathing committee was authorised to proonre a plan for floating baths. On the motion of Cr. Webb, it was agreed to send a letter of oondolence to Mrs Garfield on the loss of her husband, the late President of the United States. After some minor business had been transacted, the Council adjourned.
