Sir Gavan Dully, who was advanced as a pobable candidate for the vacancy in the representation of County Meath, Ireland, caved by the resignation of Mr Sullivan, has ainounoed that he hat abandoned his intentbn of entering Parliament at the present jinoture. Sir George Bramwell, Judge of the Interradiate Court of Appeal, and a member of tie Privy Oounoil, has resigned his position oi account of old age. The cotton spinners in Lancashire have carried out their threat to stop working in otter to checkmate the sohemes of the ring of Lverpool ootton speculators. The manufioturers have, with scarcely an exception, ap-eed to close their mills for a time. Much uicertainty exists in consequence in the cotton tade.

Disturbances of a dangerous character have biokcn out in New Orleans, arising out of the action taken by the ootton spinners in Lan* cahire closing their mills. The Khedive of Egypt has issued a formal pwclamation, decreeing the absolute abolition ol slavery in his dominions. He has given asiuranoes to the foreign representatives that he will do the utmost in his power to secure the total suppression of the slave trade in the country. A collision has occurred between two trains oi the North-eostarn railway ,at Scarborough it the north riding of Yorkshire. Several passengers reoeived injuries of a serious nature.

A serious railway accident has occurred on the line running to Cork, in the south of Ireland. Tiro trains came into collision, and several carriages were thrown off the rails. In oonsequenoe of the continued spread of the Socialist movement in Germany the Imperial Government has deoided to take severe measures, with a view of suppressing the movement. A large number of persons implicated have accordingly been expelled from Berlin.

The All England Eleven have started for Amerioa to play a series of matches in the United States and Canada prior to their arrival in Australia. Before leaving England they were entertained at a publio banquet at Nottingham. Shrewsbury, a Nottingham man, and one of the best batsmen in the team, stayed behind, being unable to leave on aocount of illness.

Galley and his family are living in New South Wales, and are desirous of remaining there. It has been determined that the money shall be expended in the purchase of land in Australia, to be settled upon him. In consequence of the increasing excitement among the Arab tribes at Tunis and Tripoli, the Turkish Government have considered it neoesiary to strongly reinfore their troops in the latter state, in order that any outbreak may be promptly suppressed.
