Sir Gavan Dully, who was advanced as a pobable candidate for the vacancy in the representation of County Meath, Ireland, caved by the resignation of Mr Sullivan, has ainounoed that he hat abandoned his intentbn of entering Parliament at the present jinoture. Sir George Bramwell, Judge of the Interradiate Court of Appeal, and a member of tie Privy Oounoil, has resigned his position oi account of old age. The cotton spinners in Lancashire have carried out their threat to stop working in otter to checkmate the sohemes of the ring of Lverpool ootton speculators. The manufioturers have, with scarcely an exception, ap-eed to close their mills for a time. Much uicertainty exists in consequence in the cotton tade.

Disturbances of a dangerous character have biokcn out in New Orleans, arising out of the action taken by the ootton spinners in Lan* cahire closing their mills. New Orleans is oie of the principal shipping ports for the dspatch of cotton to Liverpool, and the riots wjre direoted against the shipowners, whose ccmbination had brought about the stoppage ol the mills. Men who were consequently thrown out of employment in New Orleans, undo demonstration against the shipowners, aid threatened to destroy the shipping lying a( the wharves. The British and foreign Omsuls stationed at New Orleans have represented the serious aspect of affairs to the United States Government, and have derranded that troops be sent to that oity to p'Oteot the shipping. The Khedive of Egypt has issued a formal pwclamation, decreeing the absolute abolition ol slavery in his dominions. He has given asiuranoes to the foreign representatives that he will do the utmost in his power to secure the total suppression of the slave trade in the country. A collision has occurred between two trains oi the North-eostarn railway ,at Scarborough it the north riding of Yorkshire. Several passengers reoeived injuries of a serious nature.

A serious railway accident has occurred on the line running to Cork, in the south of Ireland. Tiro trains came into collision, and several carriages were thrown off the rails. A number of persona were injured. Official announcements state that the quantity of wheat available for export from the United States for the ensuing year will amount to 1,000,000 tons. The rinderpest has caused immense destruction among stook in Italy. The rapid spread of the epidemic among the herds throughout the country has caused intense alarm, and the Government are urged to take measures for its suppression. The fearful ravages caused among the Russian peasantry by their habitual and excessive intemperance have induced the Government to appoint a Commission of Inquiry) to examine into the whole subjeot. The Commission is authorised to make the most searching investigations into the causes which have led to the rapid spread of intemperance, and recommend the means best adapted to restrain the drinking propensities of the people. In oonsequenoe of the continued spread of the Socialist movement in Germany the Imperial Government has deoided to take severe measures, with a view of suppressing the movement. A large number of persons implicated have accordingly been expelled from Berlin.

The All England Eleven have started for Amerioa to play a series of matches in the United States and Canada prior to their arrival in Australia. Before leaving England they were entertained at a publio banquet at Nottingham. Shrewsbury, a Nottingham man, and one of the best batsmen in the team, stayed behind, being unable to leave on aocount of illness.

The latest aooounts from the vine-growing distriots in France are very gloomy, and it is believed that this season's yield will show a great falling off. Hopbloom, a noted hurdle raeer, by Parmesan, out of Oognisanoe, who won the Welter Handicap at Newmarket in July, 1880, and the Grand Hurdle at Sandown Park the fame year, has been purchased with a view of sending him to Australia for stud purposes. Great reductions have been made in the strength of the Greek army, which was increased some months ago in view of the threatened hostilities with Turkey. The cession of territory having now been peaceably accomplished, the army has again been placed on a peace footing. A fearful thunderstorm has occurred at Naples. Eight persons were killed by the lightning, and muoh damage was done to property. The gratuity of £IOOO voted by the House of Commons for compensation to Edmund Galley is now available. Galley and his family are living in New South Wales, and are desirous of remaining there. It has been determined that the money shall be expended in the purchase of land in Australia, to be settled upon him. In consequence of the increasing excitement among the Arab tribes at Tunis and Tripoli, the Turkish Government have considered it neoesiary to strongly reinfore their troops in the latter state, in order that any outbreak may be promptly suppressed.
