Tuesday was a very pleasant morning on the course, Fuller being the first to work. The Governor, La Mode, Nonpareil and Siesta, all stripped, went a slow mile and a half. Luna, stripped, was sent twice round at a good pace. The Dauphin and Mataku made one circuit together, a good serviceable gallop. Fugitive escorted Tasman once round, and then being pulled off, Nardoo accompanied the colt for another cirouit. On Dit and the 3-year-old ch colt by Castaway out of Mißt were sent about two miles, finishing pretty strong. The Envy filly went by herself about three miles, the first mile and a half slow and the last at a good pace. The two colts out of Idalia and Bn Avant cantered at the baok of the course. Clarence and Coldstream, in olothing, went a steady gallop of three miles. The Agent led .Trinket and the Korari— Awatea filly a good serviceable gallop of threequarters of a mile, when the two youngsters were pulled up, and Agent went on for another mile and a half, finishing fast. The filly by Papapa out of Becky Sharp, and Welcome Jack, by Traducer out of Miss Flat, both two-year-olds, went a mile and a half, part of which was done at a good pace. These two are looking very well, and are being trained by Mr John Lunn. S. Higgott gave Aurora a smart canter once round the plough. He infoimed me that he was breaking in the colt by Javelin out of Flattery, also the Constance filly, won by Dr. Diver, of Wellington, at Mr Redwood's art union. The Poet, with a hood on, made one circuit, and so did Nautilus. Hilda and the Bn Avant filly went onoe at half speed, after which Bean worked his team. Gorton, the Thunderbolt colt, had a couple of canters in company with Lady Emma, and then the two went together a good fast mile and a-half. Gorton, who I saw for the first time, is far from being a bad looking colt, while Lady Emma has grown and filled out a whole lot. She has evidently done a lot of useful work during the winter, and Bean will have little trouble in getting her as fit as a fiddle by November. The very handsome Matanaka (I won't be answerable for the spelling), the two-year-old by Traducer oat of Raupo, and Gitana, a very promising grand daughter of Zingara, were sent a nice-gallop together. Legerdemain I did not see, though I think she was on the course. The Bush Inn team were worked as follows : —Eugenie and the Revoke filly did a good useful gallop in company, the latter moving with much elasticity, as did also Gold Dust and Blue Jacket. lam told that old Longlands jumps now very well ; but from his performances over the hurdles on Tuesday morning, I should he inclined to doubt the fact, for he refused a lot of times, and blundered over his fences on more than one occasion.
Great progress is being made with the grand stand, which will be a very pretty and commodious one when finished. Mr Bed wood writes me that he is sending his three mares to Musket by next Northern boat. His other mares are foaling very fast to Anteros, and he describes bb nioe even foals, but lacking quality about the head. He expresses a very good opinion about the Dauphin, in which, so far as the colt has got, I must thoroughly agree with him, but in this connection I must 'warn backers that it would be most unadvisable to rush to back, as Outts hasnever tried him since he has been in work.
Final payments of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club Handicaps are due on Tuesday next, September 27th. Mr Hardy, the seoretary of the Oamaru Jockey Club, has been good enough to forward me programmes of the meeting to be held there on December 7th and Bth. The following are the items :—First Day—Maiden Plate of 30 sovs, 1 mile and a quarter. Oamaru Handicap of 100 sovs, 1 mile and threequarters ; nomination 2 sovs, acceptance 3 sovs. Counties Plate of 25 sovs (District Race. Handicap Time Trotting Race of 20 sovs. Publicans' Handicap of 40 sovs, 1 mile and a half ; nomination 1 sov, acceptance 1 sov. Second Day.—Handioßp Hurdle Race of 40 sovs ; Selling Hurdle Race of 15 sovs; Counties Handicap of 30 sovs, a mile and a half (Diatriot); Flying Handicap of 40 sovs, 1 mile ; Novel Handicap of 30 sovs, a mile and a half; and Consolidation Stake of 20 sovs. Nominations for all open handicaps are due in November 2nd. I notice many familiar names on the programme. Thus Mr. M. Studholme is judge; Mr M. Sherrin, handioapper ; Mr A. Paterson, president; and Mr Shalders, starter. By a Melbourne telegram which arrived here on Wednesday, 1 see that DucheßS, a four-year-old filly, is first favourite for the Melbourne Cup. Duchess, who is by Mr Redwood's old favourite Manuka, out of Princess, did not start as a two-year-old, but ran three races as a three-year-old, being second in one and winning the other two. The company, however, in all throe cases was very moderate. Her weight in the Cup is sst 71bs. She is the property of Messrs Skene Bros.
Mr Lewie, formerly of Lower Eicoarton, has sold Daniel O'Bourke to Mr T. Corbett, of G-eraldine, for 400 govs. I consider Mr Corbett has secured a regular bargain, as the compact Daniel iB quite thoroughbred, being by Slodmere, out of the English maro Brunette. He was a really good performer himself, being the winner of the Canterbury Derby and Oup. He has a great constitution, and is a really good horse, full of quality and power. He has not as yet had many chances at the stud, except when he was at Spring Greek, and while there he got Sir George, a colt who won all the best events at Wanganui and Auckland Autumn Meetings. The Hawke's Bay meeting next month, says " Spectator," should be a success, judging from a lettor to hand from Napier. Oapt. Bussell, M.H.8., owns three young ones engaged in and training for the Guineas. Prophet is at Grant's station, with Foul Play, Bquire, and Badsworth. The former and latter are first in demand for the handicaps, but my informant says they are looking too beefy. He confirms what my correspondent said last week about Wheeler's horses, and thinks Morning Star has a big say in the Hurdles, although Mr Douglas believes that he can win the Hurdles and Handicap with Uira. Fit and well, and like her former self, I would not doubt this. Loch Lumund and Sussex are still in Edwards' hands, the latter, one of the finest hurdle horses in the country, will start for the Hack Hurdloe. His log will not stand a preparation for anything better. W. Edwards has purchased Algebra from Mr Heßlop. This horse won tho Consolation at Eangitikei. Eos Heaton is breaking horses in Napier, and McElwain, also well-known here, is with Mr McLean at Tuki Tuki station. Maviß has gone into Murray's stables. Lady Mary has been bliatered all round, and is having a spell. The MaroroWainui filly is training on well, ard Eobinson's lot are expected to be at the meeting From the same letter I gather tlu-t -we are likely to have the game lot at Wanganui, together with Foul Play, Badsworth, and The Squire, Mavis, and some of Mr Murray's horses, and Wheeler's team. Sir Modred, the Cup hors 9, says the Melbourne " Sportsman," and Somnus, the Derby and Cup oolt, have put in a lot of roal good work, and both are looking and going on as well as their fanciers could expect. Hihrious has also done good work, with an occasional sharp burst. Idalium, though looking well, has not done anything the last two days, on account of having struck himself when roaring. Mr Mitchell has disposed of Tasrrun to Mr Dan O'Brien. Tasman is a three-year old by St. Albans, out of Zillah. St. Albans wbs by Blair Athoi, by Stockwell; and Zillah was oy Peter Wilkins, out of a Jersey mare.
I remind owners that nominations for the Dunedin Cap and other handicaps most be sent to Mr Sydney James on Saturday next. October Ist.
For the majority of the paragraphs which follow I am indebted to " Beacon :
I was glad to see Mata out doing walking | exercise a few days ago. Le Loup is looking well, and hia party have been backing him of late for the Canterbury J.O. Handicap and Oup ; but I think the question of his standing a thorough winding up is still a moot point. The foliowingiitems are from "Sookar's" notes :—" I learn on good autharity that thereis every probability of Mr W. Waters lending a team to represent him at the Wanganui, Waverley, and Rangitikei meetings. Grand Duchess and the Slander filly, engaged in the Waverley Guineus, will probably be the animals sent. The latter should have an easy thing in the G-uineas if in anything like form. —Foul Play, Sadsworth, and several other high-cliss performers may be expected from Napier to perform at our Spring Meeting. Mr O. H. Oireu, owner of Sir George, informed mo when last here that there was every probability of his paying this district a visit with a select team during the spring.—Mr O. M. Bichards has Mufti in work in oharge of W» Davis, and should he stand a preparation, he will figure at Waverley and Wanganui. "Saul " has the following :—The two Kaeo sports who gave Mr Edgar £IOO for The Don have not found the horse a very good spec, and the other day they played a game of euchre to eee who should own him. The winner sold the horse to Dan Munn, o£ Eawakawa. -Mr Mitchelson has purchased the filly by Knottingly, out of Moonbeam, from the Stud Company, and intends sending her to Donald Taylor to be trained. Moonstone has been backed to win £IOOO for the coming Auckland Oup. Sam Morrin has sold Don Juan.
Mr S. Buokland has brought Ariel for £3BO.
Yatterina has dropped a brown colt to Musket, being exactly eleven months front foaling to foaling. I omitted to mention in the proceeding paragraph that Chif is a yery well-bred horse, he being by Albany ont e£ Ada, and therefore half-brother to Danebury. Chif has not been long in work, and he may therefore be worth watching for future events.
The two following curious paragraphs occur in the "Australasian" answers to correspondents : "Inquirer."—ln "Land and Water" of July 16th we find the report as follows :— "A. most extraordinary handicap race over a two mile course|took place on the Cork Park Racecourse on the 7th instant, between a cob, two) ponies, and an ass, and a considerable amount of money changed hands over the result. The cob started at scratch, the ass received a mils start, and the two ponies half a mile each. One of the ponies oame first, the ass was second, and the cob last. The seoond pony beat the ass, but was disqualified in oonsequanoe of passing at the wrong side of the post."
••Grand Flaneur."—lt is stated in the "Field" of July 23rd that the Erelish Jockey Club have purchased, for £190,000, the ExnirJg Estate, near Newmarket, comprising a mansion and 2538 acres of land, in con* tiguity to the training grounds. Closely following on the Goodwood meeting came those of Brighton and Lewes. At the f ormor the Brighton Stakes of 500 sovs. ws* won by Thunderstruck. The Corporation Stakes of 300 sovs. fell to Whiteohapel, a eon of Cremorne, who started at even money. Mr Ten Broeck, the veteran American sportsman, who has just returned to the English turf, won a selling handicap with the aid of Brakespeare. The Brighton Cup, 350 sovs. fell to Exeter. Peter could have won it in a canter, but he again showed temper and stopped. In consequence of this Peter was scratched for the Ebor Handicap. His owner, Sir John Astley, has, however, at almost every meeting been picking up some of those small fish that are proverbially so sweet. The Stewards' Cup of 500 sovs fell to Toastmaster by Brown Bread. At Lowes the speedy colt by See Saw, out of Peine de Coeur, suffered his first defeat in the South of England Breeders' Two-year-old Stakes of 600 sovb, where he was first beaten on the post by a head by a colt of Count do Lagrange. The Astley Stakes, another big two-year-old race of 400 sovs, was won by Lord Btamford's Geheimness, by Rosicrucian.
Fred Archer has nearly doubled his_ most successful competitor, haying 120 winning mounts to his credit up to July 29th. The nearest approach to him is 0. Wood with Bixty-seven winning mounts, and Tom Cannon with fifty-one. The Goodwood Stales, two and a half miles, won by Brown Bess, was run in 5.03. The time of the Richmond Stales, T.Y.0., was 1.23, won by Dutch Oven. Mazurka won the Steward's Cup, T.Y.C., in 1.171. The Goodwood Cup, two and a half miles, won by Madame Da Barry, was run in 5.00, and the Chesterfield Cup, Craven Course, wag landed by Victor Emanuel in 2.15 i.
