The Markets

Consols, 99}. New Zealand securities are unchanged at the following quotations: —Five Per Cent. 10-40 Loan, 102£; Five Per Cent. 1889 Loan, 102^; Four and a-half Per Cent. 1879-1904 Loan, 99J. Adelaide and New Zealand wheat, ex store, remain at 57s and 55s respectively; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, has advanced 3d, and is quoted today at 41s 6d. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1,870,000 quarters. The market is firm. Australian tallow has advanced 3s per cwt. —best beef, 425; best mutton, 44s 6d. The market is decidedly firm. At the wool sale to-day 6800 bales were offered, making a total of 255,000 bales catalogued since the opening of the series. A firm and active demand was again experienced, and prices for crossbreds ruled fully id higher than at the close of the last series. The Mails.

The homeward New Zealand and Australian mails, via San Francisco, which left Auckland on May 16 th, were delivered here to-day.

September 24, The Irish Rebels.

There has been an alarming revival recently of the agitation in Ireland on the part of Land Leaguers, and numerous outrages are reported to have been perpetrated in various parts of the country during the past few days. Considerable anxiety prevails in consequence, both in Ireland and this country, and the strongest possible measures are being adopted by the Executive to put down the increasing disorder. Telegrams are to hand from Pretoria announcing that the newly-elected Volkstraad was opened to-day at that place. President Krnger, in his opening address, stated that the Boer Government, after due consideration, dissented from various portions of the convention agreed to last month between the English Commissioners and the Boer representatives, and he believed that the English Government would be compelled to agree to modifications of the convention in favor of the people of the Transvaal.
