THE OLD LADY AND THE TRAMP.
Mrs Deacon Grover, aged sixty, was seated mending her son’s stockings in his house in the town of Horsehoads, New York, last week, when a tramp entered and asked for something to eat. The old lady went to the cellar, and ■when eho cam j back her gold-rimmed spectacles were gone. She said to the tramp i “ You’ve got my specs.” Ho denied it, and, quietly laying down the plate, she went to a bureau, took a revolver therefrom, pointed it at the tramp and told him if he didn’t lay those specs on tho table she would shoot him where ho stood. The tramp took the spectacles from his pocket acd mildly laid them down. “ Now,” said she, “ eat what I have brought for you and get out.” He ate and departed. When her son Augustus appeared the old lady, again taking the revolver from the bureau, said to him : “ Augustus, how do yon cock this weapon ? ”
