1 PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, September 22. InquestAi tho inquest on John Jones, who dropped dead in a boarding-house, a verdict was returned of death from natural causes. Important Civil i ction. There is an interesting case in the Supreme Court owing to tho fact of the proceedings relating to an estate of £143,000, the parties to the case being all well known as notabilities of the olden times in Auckland. The testator was Captain Reid, of [Poverty Bay, whose figure was once as familiar in the town as the town clerk. The other party is the widow af the late J. S. MoEarlane as executrix and administratrix of his estate. The late J. S. MoParlane, as trustee under Captain Reid’s will, had performed certain important duties, and had been at great expense and trouble in realising portions of the estate, amounting, it was said, to £60,000, upon which tho executrix of his estate claimed commission. There was a full bar, Mr E. Hesketh representing petitioner, and Mr Coleman appearing in person as trustee, Mr R. E. Whitaker and Mr T, Oottor appearing for the residuary legatee and for Mr J. E. Clarke, who is the other trustee. The application was postponed to enable his Honor to consider certain questions of technical practice. TAUBANGA, September 22. Port of TanrangraA crowded public meeting was held last night, convened by Mr G. V. Stewart, chairman of the Tauranga County Council, when resolutions were unanimously adopted urging that tho port of Tauranga should be reopened without delay, and calling upon tho Government to give effect at once to the requisition signed by the Tepuke settlers and others, as embodied in the petition of Mr Stewart, and urging upon tho Government the necessity of affording every facility for acquiring lands adjoining the proposed railway to Lake District for purposes of railway construction and settlement. A resolution was also carried recognising the great benefit scoured to Tauranga by Mr G V. Stewart’s special settlement, together with his untiring zeal and energy displayed so often to tho advantage of the town and district. NAPIER, September 22. ElectoralA third candidate is in the field for the Waipawa seat in the person of Mr O. Smith, a local storekeeper. Cattle Stealing. A sensational arrest was made to-day. A farmer named Stevens, living at Petone, missed cattle repeatedly, and having given information to the police, a constable was sent to watch. He discovered last night a farmer named Peddle, in a very good position, driving off another cow. Peddle, when arrested, violently resisted, and had to be bound hand and foot with ropes before he could bo removed to gaol. He was brought up to-day and remanded till Friday. His boot was partly torn by tho oow-oatcher. The Effects of DrinkLouisa .Brown, licensee of tho Commercial Hotel, Green Island, was charged to-day with supplying liquor to Peter Adamson while intoxicated. Adamson foil off his dray afterwards, and was killed. The information was dismissed on the ground that it was not shown that upon supplying the drink she was aware that Adamson was intoxicated.
