WELLINGTON, September 21. CondolenceThe Mayor sent the following telegram to the American Consul-General at Auckland to-day :—“ The Mayor of Wellington, in tho name aud on behalf of the City Council and inhabitants of Wellington, is desirous of joining in what must be the universal sentiments of sorrow, sympathy and condolence with the Government and citizans of the United States on the lamented death of their noble President.” The following reply was received from Mr Griffin : —“ The people of the United States will be profoundly grateful for your sympathy. Your message will be cabled to Washington.” Supposed Wreck. A letter has been received in town from the wife of Captain Lindsay, who is residing at Christchurch, which states that the barque Rcdell Bay, which left San Francisco in December last, under the command of Captain Lindsay, has not since been heard of, and is now given up as lost. The Rodell Bay was tho vessel which conveyed to Wellington the first shipment of waterpipes for the Woinniomats waterworks. Fire. Messrs Tonks’ hay and straw store in Herbert street caught fire this evening. The flames were first discovered in the upper storey, and the building was nearly gutted before the fire was got under. The greater part of the stock was destroyed. The origin of the fire is unknown. The building is insured, but tQ what extent is unknown at at present, ' ' EAIKODRA, September 21. Mount Fyffe Quartz Reef. The previous information respecting tho yield of gold from Mount Fyffe quartz sent to Victoria is slightly incorrect. Sixteen pennyweights per ton includes the whole quantity in quartz and pyrites. At a meeting of promoters it was decided to further test the reef, and obtain quartz from other parts of the range.
