The Comet reporta sisht : ng the Torea off Waipapa laat Friday . The schooner Asteroid, one ot the xvoyai Mersey Yacht Squadron, on a trip ronud the world, may soon be looked for here. After calling at the several porta in the Mediterranean she reached Albany in July laat, thenco she went to Adelaide, and from there proceeded to Melbourne, arriving in Hobaoa's Bay on September On July 15th, the new hoppar-dredger recently constructed for Otago by Messrs W. Simons and Co., Renfrew, was tried on the bank oft Greenock, and raised aft the rate of 400 tons of material per hoar, which was plunged into its own hold or hopper cavity, capable of containing 1300 tons of spoil. It lalao loaded at the same iime the new Government steamer Perseverance, which oame alongside, with several hundred tons. Afterwards, by steam appliances, its backet girder was lifted, its twin screws put in motion, and the vessel steamed away to the measured mile, where the loaded speed was tested at seven and a half knots per hour. The vessel was then steamed down the Firth ot Clyde, where its cargo was instantly deposited through its bottom in 100 fathoms water. There were present at the trial Mr Darling, representing the Otago Harbor Commissioners ; Mr Webster, representing Messrs Kiuipplo and Merries. C.E. ; Mr Welch, naval architect to the Crown Agent of the colonies ; Mr Matthews, C.E., representing Sir John Coode ; Mr Hardie, of the Clyde Lighthouse Trust; Mr Simon, Mr Brown. &c. This vessel dredges to 35ft. depth, Titua twin screws, and is propelled and worked by two sets of compound engines of 700 horsepower, and besides loading its own cargo, can fill, it required, a fleet of barges. It is the largest and most complete hopper-dredger afloat, and it is intended to steam to New Zealand. It is worthy of note (says the »« Glasgow Herald ”) that, owing to the enterprise of that colony, they wid have a dredger the equal of which is neither in Europe nor America. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. A vessel at Heads is believed to be the Padishah from London. AMERICAN SHIPPING. The Beatrice Hanover sailed from New York on July 29th for Auckland and Wellington, with 3330 coses kerosene for Auckland, and 1200 for Wellington. The barquontine Eyner sailed on July 29th for Dunedin and Lyttelton, with 1750 cases kerosene for Dunedin, and 11,000 cases for Lyttelton. The Lady Agnes sailed on August 15th for Wellington with 5000 cases kerosene. Loading at Now York—Tongoy, for Dunedin, will probably clear on August 25th; Gwendoline, for Oamaru and Auckland, will probably clear on August 26th. Freights to the colonies are the same* as laat month, except that blocks to New Zealand ports can be placed under rates.
