[PBB PBHBB ASSOCIATION.]} AUCKLAND, September 19, Died on the Mainyard. A seaman of the ship Hermione, named John South, whilst bending the mainsail on the mainyard, died of heart disease. His comrade caught him and prevented his falling to the deck.
The s.s. Southern Cross. The Union Steam Ojmpany paid £BSOO for the Southern Cross. The purchase includes goodwill and the coal hulk. HOKITIKA, September 19. The Mayoralty. Mr John Cross, a member of the Borough Council, was elected Mayor by the Council to serve the remainder of the term of office of Mr Learmonth, resigned. There was a scramble for the position. DUNEDIN, September 19. StatisticalFor the eight months ending August 31st, the _ goods handled at the Dunedin railway station have largely increased in quantity compared with the corresponding period last year. The figures are 162,529 as against 131,689 tons. General merchandise shows 18,000 tons increase, and timber bulks largely. Earthquake. A smart shook of earthquake was felt at Port Chalmers at three o’clock this morning. Crime. Mary Ann Tupping, for stabbing John Cargill, her paramour, at Port Chalmers was committed for trial. Fires. Two small fires are reported, one a four roomed cottage at Port Chalmers and the other a two-roomed cottage at Green Island. There were no insurances. Sudden DeathGeorge Oribb, laborer, dropped down dead at Port Chalmers this afternoon from heart disease.
