SPORTING NOTES.

By Sinead. A very cold wind after tha heavy rain of the previous night ushered in Tuesday, but the sun was bright, and it looked good enough to go to tha course. It was jolly cold, and the going very greasy, but a considerable amount of work was done notwithstanding. T. Lyford was the first to commence business by jumping Bijou, who is engaged in the Hurdle Bace at Geraldine, over the hurdles under the stand. She subsequently did useful work with Borneo. Nautilus cantered with the ruga on, and the Dauphin and the Poet went together in clothing at a moderate pace, finishing pretty fast. Mataku was aent a moderate gallop with the rugs on. Luna was stripped aud sent a mile and a-balf at a good pace. Laertes was given the same work. Waikari, the jumper, did steady work with Aurora. Mr Mitchell’s pair, Tasman and Nardoo, went a serviceable gallop in company. W. Clifford rode Clarence a steady gallop twice round the plough, while Coldstream and the Oastanetta filly did moderate work. The Agent was sent twice round, being accompanied in the first circuit by Korari—Awatea filly. Both wont well, and the filly has very nice action. Bay sent On Dit and the Envy filly a good striding gallop. The latter pleases me more every time I see her. The two Welcome colts, by Traducor out of Idalia, and En Avant, were given about a mile and a half at a fair pace, finishing fast. Sir Modred’s brother moves very prettily, and will make a grand colt. La Mode and Nonpareil went together once round the plough, as did also Nonsense and Siesta, who goes rather like her brother Somnus. Nonsense has much improved in appearance. Hilda and either Dauphin or the En Avant filly wont a good gallop of a mile and a half, and Grip, with the rugs on, cantered three times round the plough. Joker led the Governor about two miles at a fair pace, and Mr Webb’s lot, who had done good work the day previous, were cantered on the inside.

Owners who intend nominating or accepting for Geraldine must not forget that genera entries are due on the 22nd inst. Owners are reminded that nominations for the Wanganui Stakes Handicap of 150 oovs and the Handicap Hurdle Race close on September 23rd, at the Pier Hotel, while acceptances and general entries are due on October 10th. I notice that the annual qualification is 3 sova for non-members, and for one meeting 2 sovs. It will be as well also to remember that the sweep of 5 sovs for the Guineas, the entrance of 3 sovs for the Maiden Plato, and the final payments on the Hurdle BacO'(2 sovs), Spring Handicap (5 sovs), and Flying Handicap (3 sovs) must be sent to Mr F. D. Luckio by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27th. The qualification fee is 2 sovs, payable at the same time.

From the Napier “ Mercury ” I learn (says “Beacon”) that Hr Allan M'Lean has disposed of the racehorses Mavis and The Laird to Mr Percy Martin, and they have gone to keep company with the same owner’s late purchases Mischief and the Mororo-Wainui filly. Mr M'Lean has also placed his three-year-old filly Louie under Mr Martin’s care to prepare her for her spring engagements ; Mr 0. 0. Murray’s Firefly, which has been “added to the list ” since his last appearance, is also in charge of this careful trainer, whoso team now numbers six. I think that Mavis was always—at any rate last season —in the possession of Mr O. O. Murray. Perhaps Merlin is the animal alluded to. Be this as it may, Percy Martin has a very tidy team, and I wish him luck with them. “ Beacon ” also informs his readers that Mata has been suffering from a bad cold, but has now recovered and resumed his preparation.
