CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, Septembbb 19. [Before J. Ollivier, R. Westenra, and J. B. Parker, J.P.’s.]
Drunkenness. —For this offence Alfred Shaw and Samuel Payne, alias George Oorry, were fined 5s. —A case against Edward Fitzgerald was struck out, the police stating that he had been taken to the Hospital, where he was likely to remain some time on account of injuries received before arrest, while drunk. Larceny. —Edward Hampton was charged with stealing, on September 17th, a ring valued at £1 from Albert Ashley. Prosecutor deposed that on the day named prisoner came where prosecutor was working, at Crowe's bottling stores. After some conversation, prosecutor was called away. On returning, he found his coat lying on the floor. He picked up the coat, and examined the pocket in which he had left the ring. It was gone. He taxed prisoner with the theft,iwho, however, denied it. Prosecutor then undertook to search prisoner, when the latter dropped the ring into a wash tub that was standing near. Prisoner denied the offence. He was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment.
Passing a Valueless Cheque. —Charles Hylands, was charged with obtaining goods by means of a valueless cheque. Ho was on remand from Ashburton, and, on tho application of the police, was remanded till September 21st.
Rowdyism —Robert Montgomery, on bail, was charged with creating a disturbance in the Zetland Arms on Saturday evening last, and with assaulting J. Toovey, the landlord, when requested to leave. Tho evidence showed that accused had by his violent behaviour collected a crowd in front of the hotel, and finally had assaulted Mr Toovey, who tried to put him out. The aocuiod stated that a row had occurred between the landlord, and some other person, accused interfered to protect that person, and was turned on by the landlord. As the accused stated ho could produce a witness to prove that he had not assaulted the landlord, the case was 'adjourned till the following day, the bail being enlarged. Miscellaneous. —Ohing George, charged with having an unregistered dog in his possession, produced receipt for tho payment of the registration fee for the dog. The case was dismissed. —Joseph Wilson, for a proved offence of the same kind, wag fined 20j and costs. — John Sullivan, Charles Haughoy, and John Haughoy, wero charged with furiously riding horses on tho Perry road at 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 11th. From the evidence of Mr F. Cross, it appeared that aa ho, his wife, and three children, wore walking on tho footpath, the throe accused rode up at a tremendous pace. The horse ridden by John Haughey came on to the footpath amongst tho party. Ono child was run over by tho horse, but by some extraordinary chance, though right under it, escaped with a cut on tho head and a bruise or two on tho face. Mrs Cross and the other children were knocked down or pushed out of the way, without being seriously injured, though they were in great danger. Mr Cross ran after them, and on enquiring their names, received a volley of abuse. Mrs Cross and two other witnesses gave evidence corroborative of the above. John Haughey was fined £5, Ohas. Haughey £3, and John Sullivan £l. The expenses of ono witness to be paid out of tho fine. — Edward George was charged with furiously driving a horse in a trap on the Papanui road on Sunday last Defendant stated that the horse shied at a piece of paper, got tho reins under his tail, and bolted. Ho offered to produce a witness to the fact. The case was dismissed. William Miller, for allowing eight horses to wander, web fined 20s. —8. Middleborough, for a similar offence, two cases, was fined 20s. Henry Horn was charged with violently assaulting Nathaniel Vole. There wore no witnesses, and the principals swore point blank to opposite versions of the story. The case was dismissed. — Michael Rooney was fined 20s, costs of Court 16s, solicitor’s fee £1 Is, and expenses of one witness for using abusive and threatening language to A. O. Truscott, tho case having been fully proved.
