Arawata, at the Bluff J MELBOURNE, September 14 Numerous Cabinet meetings have been held during the week, and the Government work is in a forward state for the opening of Parliament on the 20th, when the Premier hopes to make his budget speech. Tho Land, Loan, and Harbor Bills are agreed upon. The coroner’s enquiry on the railway accident continued on tho Bth. Mr Backhouse, inspector of the permanent way, proved that the lines had been inspected on the morning of tho accident. Mr Smiles, tho locomotive superintendent, attributed the breakage of tho wheel to the sudden jolting of the rails. If the broken one had come under his notice, ho would have condemned it. The “ Argus," replying to the comments of the opposition press, says the Government can come to no decision on the question of their liability in tho recent railway accident until the enquiry is completed, when, it negligence is proved, the claims of tho sufferers will be fairly met. The injured passengers are progressing favorably, except Mr Cole, who is seriously ill. Mr Moore also is more hurt than was at first supposed, but the doctors are not anticipating any danger. After a thorough inspection of all the railway carriages, tho officials informed Mr Bent that everything was efficient and satisfactory. The Goldsborough sheep sale terminated on the 14th with the Tasmanian lots. A ram belonging to Mr Gibson fetched 330 guineas, and another of Mr James Gibson’s 300 guineas Tho prices were altogeter exceptionally good. The Frozen Meat Company have received a telegram from London advising that tho average price of the Protos mutton was 6d, which is considered most satisfactory. The company are taking additional precautions to ensure greater perfection in tho next shipment.

The Governor’s aide-de-camp caught a thief in the act of rifling his pockets in the office at Government House. The thief boldly avowed his intention to ransack the place. On June 30th, the Adelaide Savings Bank had at the credit of depositors £1,249,000, being an increase over last year of £218,000. PERTH, September 14. Messrs Jourbert and Twopenny propose to hold an exhibition. They are receiving support from tho Government.
