There were some chaDgea (says " Figaro ) in the cast of " Adrienne Lecouvrenr" on its reproduction at the Court. Mr Norman Forbes replaced Mr Lin Bayne as the Abbe, and was a decided change for the better, though he failed to impart anything like reality to this very difficult part. Mr Price made an excellent Prince de Bouillon, and Miss Ada Ward a fair Princesse, though her manner seems to be hopelessly melodramatic. The members of the Theatre- Fran gais are, it is well known, divided into ' pensionnaires" and " societaires" ; the former receive only a salary ; the latter, in addition to their salary, are entitled to a share in the net receipts. Last year the amount payable to each of the societaires under this latter head varied from 50,000fr.t070,000fr. (£2OOO to £2800). The royalties paid to authors during the past five years averaged annually more than 200,000 fr. (£8000). A statistical summary lately published tells us that the financial affairs of the theatre were never at a lower ebb than during the revolutionary year 1848. M. Got, whose income is now ' 100,000 fr. a year, drew during that year 250 fr. a month, while the tragedienne, Mdlle. Favart, received only lOOfr. a month. The entire sum paid to authors during that year was only 27,100 fr. (JB1084). Alfred de Musset, for 146 representations of various pieces of his composition, received 4773 fr., while Victor Hugo received 817 fr. for eleven representations of " Hernani." Two years ago this piece was reproduced with such success that the author's royalty for three monthß amounted to 60,0D0fr. (£2000). The only difficulty in adapting " Michael Strogoff " to the English stage promised to be the conversion of the two impossible newspaper correspondents into something like reasonable beings, instead of outrageouß caricatures. We understand that Mr Byron has entirely remodelled these personages and rewritten them. The English journalist will be represented by Mr Byron himself, whose engagement will complete a cast of exceptional brilliancy, and which speaks highly for the Messrs Gatti's determination to make " Michael Strogoff " a deserved success.
