SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this body was held last evening in the Borough Council Chamber at 7 o'clock. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Ors. Nioholl, Hall, Day, Paritt, White and Langdown. The returning officer's report, announcing tho re-election of Messrs Andrew, Forrester and Joyce, was then read, and those gentlemen having made the usual declaration, took their seats.—A letter from the Postal and Telegraph Department, Wellington, advising that the Post Office, Sydenham, will be permanently kept open from 6 30 till 8 o'clock each Saturday evening for the receipt of Savings Bank deposits, was read and ordered to be Acknowledged wi'h thanks.—The manager of tho Bank of New Zealand wrote, stating that the Council's account had been credited with the sum of £45 7a 8i for interest, as vide Mr J. L. Coster's letter of 2Sth January, 1878, but intimating that no interest would be allowed on current account in future. Refoned to the finance committee—Letters were read from Messrs J. T. Bell and W. D Mfares enclosing plana of proposed sub division of properties in the. borough. Referred to the works committee, with power to aot.—Messrs Harper and Co., solicitors to the Spreydon Iv_,ad Board, called attention to certain public allegations respecting the refusal of that body t; allow the Sydenham town olerk to inspect its books, stating that even if the Government gave the neoossary authority for such inspection it would be resisted unless the 132nd lection of the Road Board Ordinance was first repealed. Referred to the finance committee.—Tho finance committee reported for the past fortnight as under : —Receipts, £238 18s 4d; expenditure, £261 5s 3d ; credit balance at Bank, £698 12s 7d. The report was received and adopted. The works committee reported :—" That the Mayor and Or. White had inter"viewed the Manager of the Rakaia Bnd Ashbarton Porks Railway Company re a piece of land about an acre in extent, and had allowed the use of it for railway purposes on tho terms proposed by the company ; that No. 2 section of the South belt contract was finished, but the committee advisod that the contractor should be called upon to show cause wby two weeks' fine should not be inaioted, he having exoeeded hi 3 oontraot time dve weeks. It was expeoted that tho works on that belt would be finished ten days hence." The report waß reoeived and adopted.—As September 20th will be the fourth anniversary of the borough, it was decided to give the employes a holiday, and also to close the Oounoil's offices on that day.—The various committees were reappointed as last year.—Or. Day tendered his resignation, owing to his being about to •visit .England. The resignation was acoepted a general hope being expressed that on his return he would be re-elected to the Council. A long discussion then ensued as to what steps should be taken to seoure one or more eligible candidates to represent Sydenham in the General Assembly. The idea that found most favor being that a public meeting of the burgesses should be called during the ensuing week to seleot a oommittee for that purpose. After some routine business, the Counoil adjourned.
