The schooner Herald from Picton arrived yesterday afternoon. Meaara Cuff and Graham a schooner Mand Graham is loading lor Taranaki and Kaipara, and ia to sail to-day. The Union Steamship Company’s a.a. Penguin arrived at 4 a.m. on Saturday from Mannkan via coastal porta, and left soon after half-paat nine at night for Wellington. The following notice to mariners ia published in the “ Gazette ” ;—The harbormaster at Kaipara reports that the Mary Catherine Bank, Kaipara harbor, ia extending in a south-easterly direction from the red bnoy ; there is only lift of water at low water spring tides, and the bottom is very uneven nearly half-way across to the middle bank. Masters ot vessels bound up the Otamatea, Pahi, and Oruawharo rivers ahonld be careful to keep the lead going when in this locality, and should keep in the deep water towards the middle bank. Captain Williams, of Wellington, has purchased an iron screw steamer, classed 100 A 1 at Lloyds, and built on the Clyde by Murdoch and Murray. The following are her dimensions : Length over all, 164 ft.; breadth, 23ft. ; gross register tonnage, 416 tons. She has two compound surface condensing engines of 65-horse power nominal, and 365 indicated ; diameter of cylinders, 20iu. and 40in. ; stroke of piston, 27in.; working pressure of boiler, 801 b.; her consumption of coal will be 6£ tona per day, ■with a speed of 9| knots. She ia fitted with two steam winches (horizontal) and patent windlass ; and she has a space for 50 tons water ballast. She is rigged as a topsail schooner ; her quarter-deck is raised 4ft. on the main deck ; her draught with 480 tona is 12ft., and with 320 tons 10ft. Bhe has accommodation for twenty saloon and twenty steerage passengers. She was to leave the Clyde in the second week of this month, under command of Captain Williams (who brings her out himself) ; calls ot Cardiff to fill up with coal, and as she leaves the latter port for Wellington direct, may be looked for about the end of October.
