MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
OHBISXOHUBOH CITY, The election of representatives for the various wards to fill the vacancies in the City Council took place to day, commencing at 9 a.m. The members to be elected, according to the Beturning Officer’s advertised notice, were as follows :—One member for the Southeast Ward, at St. John’s schoolroom, Hereford street ; one member for the South-west Ward, at St. Michael's schoolroom, Durham street; one member for the North-east Ward, at the Orange Hall, Worcester street Bast; and two members for the North-west Ward, at the City Council Chambers. It appears, however, with regard to the North-west Ward, that owing to an oversight, only one member will (at this election) be returned in that ward. A notice to the following effect appears outside the polling booth :—“ There being no person nominated for the extraordinary vacancy in the above ward (N.W.), there will only one person be elected. —(Signed) G. L. Ebb, Eeturning Officer.” A fair amount of interest appeared to be taken in the election generally, but of the contested seats, that for which Mr Hulbert and Mr Manning are rival candidates appeared to command most interest. Owing to the retirement—on account of alleged disqualification—of Mr Tait, Mr Charles Louisson had a walk over for the South-west Ward. The poll closes at 6 o’clock. BOEOUQH OF SYDENHAM. In this borough no opposition was offered to the retiring candidates who sought re-elec-tion. At the appointed hour, therefore, viz., noon, the returning officer, Mr Charles Allison, jun., declared Messrs Andrew, Forrester and Joyce duly elected Councillors for the borough, and the usual notice to that effect was posted up.
