[PBB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, September 8. Stuck in the Mud. Last evening tho wife of Constable Houghton, while walking behind her husband across the railway bridge at Helensville, was blown off. Her husband beard her scream and jumped off in the darkness, landing in mud, and became so deeply embedded that he could not move. A child who saw the occurrence ran to the station, and Hull, a railway porter, umped into the creek and caught Mrs Soughton, who had drifted a hundred yards with her head under the water. Hull was unable to land owing to the mud, but he held the woman's head out of tho water until both were resoused by a boat. Animation was restored with difficulty. Houghton was hauled safely out of the mud by ropes. Maori Concessions. The Kingite Maoris have resolved to open Kawhai Harbor to Pakeha traders, NAPIBE, September 8. PoliticalA requisition is being got up to Captain Bussell asking him to stand for Napier. Mr John Buchanan, the defeated candidate of previous elections, is the only aspirant at present. Mr Johnston's chances in opposition to Mr Ormond’s return are considered very poor. The contest between Mr Bussell and Mr Sutton for Hawke's Bay will bo close, the latter being slightly tho favorite. Recreation Ground. A company is in course of formation to lease tho borough reserves of six acres, for the purpose of converting it into a public recreation ground.
DUNEDIN, September 8. Committal. John Ferguson has been committed for trial for forgery. Fixtures. The Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting is fixed for November 29th and 30th, and tho Agricultural Show for December 2nd and 3rd. INYEEOAEQILL, September 8. Another Earthquake. A slight bub rather prolonged shook of earthquake was felt last night, about 10.50. Direction, B. and W.
