SHBURTON POULTRY SHOW.
On Saturday afternoon the Ashburton Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Society held their initial annual exhibition in the Town Hell, the following gentlemen from Christchurch kindly acting as judges in tho classes named : —Fowls, ducks, geese, and turkeys, Messrs J. H. Wood, W. B. Ernshaw, and J. G. Flexmore } pigeons, Messrs Ernshaw and Flexmore; canaries, &c., Mr T. Bachelor. The arrangements for the display were excellent, reflecting credit on Mr W. Charlton, hon. eeo., and the rest of the committee. The following is the prize list, omitting mention of classes in which there was no entry or no award : Poultry. —Black-breasted game cock, S. The attendance was not so large as may be expected as the society becomes known. A number of children were present, and derived much enjoyment from watching the manoeuvres of Mr T, Bachelor’s trained birds. During the morning a pigeon race from Timaru railway station to Ashburton took place under the aupioes of the society. The entries were Mr J. Permain’s Smut and Cadmus and Mr S. Saunders’ Random and Chieftain. Tho result was a dead heat between the four carriers. A strong north-easter was blowing, and seriously impeded tho movements of the quartette, whose flight occupied an hour and throe quarters.
