(By Telegraph.] [Per 8.8, Ta Aanau, at the Bluff] MELBOURNE, August 31. A farewell banquet given to Mr Clarke, President of the Exhibition, was attended by 120 gentlemen. The Premier took the chair, and presented Mr Clarke with a handsome album containing the portraits of all the commissioners. Every precaution is being taken in Melbourne to prevent emall-pox. The importation of rags from Sydney will cease until the plague is subdued. One vessel, which arrived with a quantity on board, was prevented from landing. ADELAIDE, August 31. A shocking attempt at murder was made on a Mr Smith, of the firm of Russell and Co. He was stopped by two men and knocked down, and whilst one held him tho other cut hi* throat, and then robbed him. Mr Smith was found next morning. Hopes are entertained of his recovery. Quar'z containing gold has boon discovered twenty-seven miles west of Adelaide. A girl named Pry held a flask of gunpowder to a candle in the Exhibition grounds, and the explosion badly shattered her hands. PERTH, August 31, Tho Legislative Council has affirmed a resolution in favor of the construction of a lighthouse at Cape Leuwin.
