Escapbd from Bubnham.—A lad named Arthur Freeman made his escape on Thursday morning from the Burnham Industrial School, and was found later in the day at Lincoln, when he was taken care of by Sergeant Weatherley, and brought to Christchurch this morning. He will be restored to the care of the master at Burnham this after* noon. Lyttbiton Maqistbatb's Coubt.—The adjourned charge against Robert Boyd for cruelly using a mare found in hiß possession was heard at this Court this morning, and the defendant -raa fined 40s, in default four days' imprisonment—The license of the Ocean View Hotel, Governor's Bay, was temporarily transferred from Mr Pym to Mr Kennedy. JbILBOTOBAI,.—We learn that Mr J. D. Enys, of Castle Hill station, intends to offer himself for election for the new Coleridge district, created under the Bepresontation BUI.
Pbopbbctt Tax Ofpicb.—The Christchurch office has now been closed, and payments either of the property tax or land tax will have for the future to be remitted to the receiver at Wellington.
Philosophical Institute.—A meeting of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute was held last uvening, when Mr W. M. Maskell read a paper —" Home further notes on the scale inseots of New Zealand." Union Rowing Club.—A special meeting j of the above club was held last night at the ' Commercial Hotel, when it was determined to remove the sheds now in uae, and to call for tenderu for their re-ereotion on a site to be oeieoted. SOHOLASTIO.—On Wednesday in the District Sohool, Ashburton, Miss Stewart waa presented with a gold chain in token of the «teem in whioh ahe was held duriDg her five years' aupervision of the Ashburton Infant School, Mr Stott, headmaster, in presenting the gift on behalf of the teachers and aoholara, took occasion to express regret at the proapeot of losing Miss Stewart's services, and apoke in high terma of her tact and success as a teacher.
; DBUNK, AMD BbFUSING TO SHOW BAILWAT Ticket.—An old man named William Mann was arrested this morning on the Ohriatchurch railway platform for travelling without a i ticket, he refusing to produoe the same or i pay his fare. On reaohing the Depot, the railway ticket from Lyttelton to Ohristchurch, and also upwards of £3 in casfa, were found on him. As he was intoxicated, he was detained on that charge, with the object of interviewing the Bench in the morning. | Wbathbb Exchange.—The following is the intercolonial weather exchange :—Sydney, Thursday evening—Depression deepening and extending in Western Australia, with moderate N. W. winds. In Eastern Australia light B.W. winds and fine weather. Barometer — Albany, 29 8; Portland, 3X2. Ikqubst.—The inquest on the body of I Daniel Howard, who died from injuries
received on the railway at Ohristohurol station, took place this afternoon at foui o'olock. Pabliambntaby! Wit.—The oorrespc ndenl of the " Timsru Herald" records the following little joke which occurred the other morning about breakfast time :—" Mr Seddon affeoted to be very indignant because the Government would not allow any adjournment for meals, and expressed himself somewhat in this style —' I ham astonished, Sir, at the hattitude assumed by the Government. I ham, &c, &u.' Mr Pyke interjected in a stage whisper, • Why, you have nothing to complain of. You've had your mouth full of ham for the last half hour.' Feeble, you will say, perhaps—but then you must remember they had been up all night." Education Boabd.—The Education Board for the Distriot of North Canterbury met yesterday afternoon; Present—Mr Inglis (chairman), Bev. Ohas. Eraser, Messrs H. J. Tanered, Cunningham, Peryman, Booth. The secretary reported the business done by the ohairman since last meeting, whioh was confirmed. Inspector's reports on various schools in the district were laid on the table. In reference to a letter from Mason's Flat, it appeared that the master wished to be allowed to let the house provided for his accommodation, owing to the absenoe of his wife. It was resolved to reply generally that the Board would insist on occupation of teaohers' residences except good reasons were advanced. Bev. Ohas. Eraser suggested that the teachers and committees should in all cases be held responsible for the good care of the buildings. The seal of the Board was attached to certain pupil teachers' agreements and contracts for Methven and Waikari. Correspondence was read in reference to a certain reserve whioh the Wakanui school committee desired to acquire, and asked the advice of this Board on the subject. It was resolved to communicate with the Government. In reference to Mr Cunningham's resolution, postponed from a previous meeting, the chairman reported that the Board's solicitor advised that a regulation of the charaoter suggested could be introduced, but not made retrospective. The motion was again postponed till next meeting. The Bev. Ohas. Eraser gave notice of motion —" That a visiting committee for the Normal sohool be appointed, to consist of the chairman and two members of the Board. Pionebb Bicycle Club.— The aanual general meeting of the Pioneer Bicycle Olub was hold at head quarters last night. The ohair was taken by the captain, Mr E. O. Earr. The following gentlemen were eleoted members of the olub : Messrs A.M. Ollivier, H. H. Loughnan, G. M. Douglas, A. E. Preece, A. Dowry, H. Spencer, H. Langdown, B. W. Mountfort. The following officers eleoted:—Messrs E. 0. Earr, captain (reelected) ; T. Searell, sub-captain (re-elected) ; J. E. Norris, hon. sec. and treasurer; committee—Messrs Ollivier, Douglas, Spencer, Dalton, Dunsford. Several new rules were agreed to and ordered to be printed. The opening run for the season will be to Woodend on Saturday, 3rd instant, leaving the Post-office at 2.30 p.m. The meeting then adjourned.
