William Philpot, who wu arretted on a charge of embezzling money belonging to the Hearts of Oak Lodge, was brought up at Featherston on Monday and discharged, the Erosecutor stating that the money alleged to ave been embezzled had been accounted for. Customs. The Customs revenuo for the month amounted to £20,090. Vital Statistics. During the month 109 births and thirty, one deaths were registered in Wellington and sixteen marriage certificates issued. WEBTPOBT, AugUßt3l. The Harhour Works. The faots of the rapid expansion of the coal trade, and of steamers being built for this port, are drawing attention to the urgent necessity of improving the harbour. An enthusiastic public meeting was held last night and passed resolutions in which it was urged that "the £2OOO placed on the estimates for harbor works at Westport is utterly inadequate, and that the Government be urged to expend £IO,OOO during the current year in extending the present training wall from the mouth of the rirer to low water mark;' which work forms part of the Buller Harbor Scheme recommended by Sir John Ooode." TIMABTJ, August 31. Customs. The Oußtoms revenue for the month of August, colleoted at the port of Timaru, amounted to £2686. For the corresponding month of last year it waa £985, showing an increase of over £I7OO. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for the month are— Births, 33 ; deaths, 12 ; marriages, 11. DUNEDIN, August 31. The vital statistics for the month were : Births, 181; deaths, 68 ; marriages, 36. Customs. The Customs revenue was £41,553 2s fid, against £33,172 18s lOd for the corresponding month last year.
