MELBOURNE, August 30. The Eailway Acaident. The train which mot with tho accident this morning at Jolimont was the express from Brighton to Melbourno. Tho disaster occurred at 9 a.m. When tho train ran off tho lino throo carriages were hurled over an embankment into a swamp. One first-class carriage was smashed to pioces, and othor two were overturned. Threo passongers were extricated dead from a first-class carriage. Tho scone at the place of the disaster was most distressing, and groat excitement prevails throughout the city and suburbs over the occurronce. Traffic on the line is entirely suspended. Later. Later intelligence from tho scene of tho accident shows that four persons have boon killed, viz.:—Mr Garnott, Baptist minister of Brighton; Mr Jameson, law clerk; Mr Bailliero, publisher; and a laborer, whoso name is unknown The following are tho names of those injured seriously : —Messrs Bliss and Lyons, both auctioneers; slightly injured Major Goach, Mr Fosbery, of tho Crown Law Office; Messrs Elmstie, Stephons, Kenwick, Edward Wright and Edwards. 9.30 p.m.
It was stated that Mr Stephens, who was seriously injured at tho railway accident this morning, died this evening. This is incorrect, as he still lives, although the doctors hold out no hopes of his recovery. It has tranppired that he is a relative of Judge Stephens. All the other injured persons are progressing favorably. The total number of persons injured amount to twenty.
