[FEB PBEBB ASSOCIATION.] THAMES, August 29. The Milk Again. There has been a fresh outbreak of scarlet fever, and two fatal cases occurred on Saturday. The officer of the Board of Health reports this morning that all tho families in which the disease appeared were served with milk from one particular dairy. Tho medical officer is now investigating tho subject. WELLINGTON, August 29. Narrow EscapeAn extraordinary escape from immediate death occurred cn tho ship Berwickshire on Saturday. She is lying at the railway wharf discharging pipes for the Wainuiomata water works. A huge pipe, weighing 27cwt., had been slung to a height of 12ft. above the open hatch, when tho tackle broke and it fell in a direct line with where four men were standing. Fortunately in its descent it canted, and was smashed against the combing, the fragments falling round tho men, but not one sustaining tho slightest injury. The deck was considerably damaged. InquestAt the inquest on the man Dewar, who died from a stab received at the Hutt some months ago, a verdict of “Manslaughter” was returned against Skerrett, alias Black, who inflicted the wound. HOKITIKA, August 29. The DisaffectedA public meeting was held in the town hall to-night, for the purpose of protesting against tho passing of the Representation Bill and especially to object to the proposed disfranchisement of the Totara district. The following resolution was passed—“ That this mooting protests against the injustice done to Westland by abolishing the Totara electorate, such electorate being of immense area and of great importance as a mining district, with every prospect of making rapid strides in population and wealth, as its mineral and other sources arc developed ; furthermore to point out tho inconvenient arrangements and boundaries as laid down in the Representation Bill for the representation of Hokitika and Kumara respectively ; also that the measure is unfair, impolitic and unjust to the people of this coast, from tho Teremakau to Jackson’s Bay.” The Weather. It has been blowing a gale of wind for the last forty-eight hours' with heavy rain. Sending' the Hat Round. A shilling subscription is to be started here towards recouping Sir J. Vogel for the money he paid out of hie own pocket to the civil servants of hia department. TIMARU, August 29. MunicipalThere were six nominations to-day for three vacant scats in the Borough Counc' l . The Drink Again. An irqusst was held at Temuka to-day, touching the death of Thomas Howarth. Tho evidence showed that deceased was at tho recent fire at Mr John Hayhuret’s, and while there he was seen to drink two bowls of raw spirits, supposed to have been taken from the house. Tho medical evidence was to tho effect that deal'--. was caused by alcoholic poisoning, and a verdict was returned accordingly. Native Industry. The shares in tho Paper Mill Company at Temuka are being rapidly taken up. OAMARU, August 29. FireA house belonging to Mr Jarvis White was destroyed by fire about ten o’clock last night. Before the brigade reached the spot the building had been almost entirely consumed. The house was unoccupied at the time, and no clue has yet been found as to how the fire originated. The insurance on tho building was £SO, stock £IOO, and furniture £25, all in the New Zealand office. DUNEDIN. August 29. Increase of Voters During the last twelve months 690 names have been added to the Dunedin electoral roll. The Weather. Tho weather hes been bitterly cold hero to-day, with a heavy westerly gale and several light snow showers. In Bankruptcy. The Trustees held a further examination of Mr S. Clayton to-day, and Mr Walter Guthrie handed in a written statement contradicting Clayton’s allegations, accompanied with documentary evidence. Suspicious. A woman named Harriet York was charged at the Police Court to-day with stealing a watch from Peter Campbell, who was found dead under such peculiar circumstances a few days ago in a right-of-way near the Octagon. Portions of the watch, the police stated, bad been offered for sale at a watchmaker’s chop by the accused. A remand was granted. [TBOiI THE OWN COBEB.3PONDENT OF THE “ PRESS.”] It has transpired that Government have received another insolent letter from Sir J. Vogel by tho San Francisco mail, which is not made public. It is said to be more offensive than the previous one. I hear that the steam communication committee will report strongly in favor of immediate preliminary steps being taken towards establishing direct steam communication with tho Mother-country. It is stated, also, that the English actuaries’ report on the Government Insurance department has arrived, and will be presented to Parliament to-morrow.
