LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

This Council met on Monday night, when thcro were present—Ore. Macpherson (in the chair), Macdonald, Garforth, Reed, Webb, Grubb, Wjburne, Smith.—The receipts since the previous meeting were stated to bo £260 15s 6d. —A letter from the Mayor was read, stating that he had been unable to get better terms for the siding than had been offered, namely, a ten years’ lease, also stating that the Public Works Department wore waiting for information from the railway department hero.—Mr Li tie wrote, calling attention to the unsafe state of the road to Governor’s Bay at a point near Corsair Buy, where ft bridge was erected The opinion of the councillors seemed to bo that some metal might be laid on the bridge. It was left with the works committee to report. — Captain Schenkel asked on what terms 20. r t frontage in Norwich quay, near Mr Qaooreo’s property, couid bo leased from the Council. The application was loft with the estates committee. — Thomas Newton wrote re old Governor’s Bay road and its present bad state. The works committee wore authorised to put the road in proper condition.—Mr# Green, wife of the late Captain Green, of the missing vessel Bee, wrote asking if any assistance could be rendered her, she having lost her husband and her three sons in the vessel named. —Or. Smith said it was the most deserving ease he had come across. He had no doubt but what a successful subscription list could be opened in her behalf. Ho moved that a reply bo sent to her expressing the Council’s sympathy with her, and in the meantime, until the Mayor’s return, her requirements would be seen to. Seconded by Councillor Webb and carried. A petition from residents, asking that Ripon street be put in permanent order, it being in a very bad slate, was read. The foreman of works said it would coat about £l2O, and the work was in contemplation, as soon as the works in hand wore pushed forward a little. The works committee was loft with the petition to report on at the next meeting.— Accounts, amounting to £lO4 4s, wero passed for payment.—Mr Kent, engineer at the pumping station, reported that it took two tons of Malvern to do the work of one ton of Westport cop! ; a ton of Malvern cost 18s 9i, while a ton of Westport cost 34s 6J. It would thus bo oeen that, for the purposes of the pumping station, the Westport coal

was very much the best. The water committee was left in charge of the report.— Mr Sowden, the inspector of works, reported a number of slips of land in the Governor's Bay road and elsewhere, and recommending that they be removed. —Mr Sowden, as fire nspector, asked that some assistance be rendered to J. Fenton, a fireman who was injured at the recent fire at the Albion stables. It was left with the fire brigade committee to report upon.— O.i the suggestion of Or. Weyburno, seconded by Or. Seed, 7s per day was allowed him until the report came up.—Or. Webb gave notice of motion that the following amendment bo made to the swine by-law—- “ Provided that any occupier of land not being less than 40 porches in one block may keep ewino thereon, but such swine shall not bo kept within forty-four yards of any town section of the town of Lyttslton.or within forty• four yards of any public road or thoroughfare, and no person shall be allowed to keep a greater number than two pigs, unless it be on ton acres in one block.” A petition, signed by ninety residents, supported the proposed alteration. Or. Grubb asked wkat the

amount of outstanding rates was. Tho clerk said about £l4O.
