A Dangerous Feat. George Maxwell, a fireman on board the steamer St. Kilda, was precipitated down the hold. Ho remained unconscious for hours, and was removed to the Hospital. A BruteAbel Fletcher, the ex Auckland hangman, has been arrested for a brutal assault upon his wife. Ho was remanded pending her recovery. Bail was refused. The Black Monarch. Tawhaio has dismissed his advisers and sent for Tengaksw. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 27. Fatal Accident. A fatal accident occurred at 2.30 to-day to a seaman named Maclean, on board the Hawoa. Whilst discharging cargo a heavy bale, which was being hoisted from the hold, gave way and struck the seaman on the head, jamming it against an iron stanchion and causing almost instantaneous death. WANGANUI, August 27. Football. A football match between Wanganui and Nelson resulted in a victory for the former by one try to nil. The game was well contested throughout. WELLINGTON, August 23. The Drink AgainThe man Dewar, who was stabbed in a drunken fray at the Hutt some months ago, died in the hospital lust night from the effects of hie wounds. His assailant was remanded from last session, as Dewar was too ill to appear. The charge will caw bo a more serious one. DUNEDIN, August 23. New Theatre. The Froethought Association are building a handsome Lyceum, much like the Queen’s Theatre inside, to hold 800 people. In a Wrong Place. A petition is being signed to get Mr W. Green, pastor of the Christian Disciples, to stand for the General Assembly for the city. New SynagogueThe consecration of the New Jewish Syna gogue took place to-day with much ceremony The old synagogue will be used as a Masonic Hall in future. SportingA cablegram has been received announcing the arriva at Melbourne of Mr Prince’s horses in splendid condition.
