Volunteer Eeview

A grand review of volunteers took place to-day at Edinburgh before the Queen. Over 40,000 men wore under arms, and the affair was most successful.

Prorogation

Both Houses of Parliament adjourned to-day until Saturday next, when the prorogation will take place. Heavy Floods.

Heavy rain continues to fall throughout England, and is causing severe damage by floods. It is, moreover, proving most disastrous to harvest operations.

The Markets

Three per Cent. Consols have again fallen to 99f. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £12,875,000. The Bank rate of discount has advanced to 4 per cent.; the market rate remains at 3 per cent. New Zealand securities are unchanged at the following quotations: Five per Cent. 10.46 Loan, 104 ; Five per Cent. 1889 Loan, 103 ; Four and a Half per Cent. 1879-1904 Loan, 10 Of. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, remains at yesterday’s quotation, 575, and New Zealand wheat, ex ship, at 56s 6d; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 40s 6d. Australian tallow : best beef, 35s 6d ; best mutton, 37s 6d ; prices for hides are firm, especially for heavy kips. Further large withdrawals of gold for North America were made at the Bank of England to-day. At the wool auction to-day 9300 bales were catalogued. There was a fair demand. The withdrawals to date amount to 2000 bales. Crossbreds generally are f d to Id lower than at last sales. NEW TOE.K, August 26. The State of the President.

A bulletin issued this morning reports that President Garfield has suffered a serious relapse, and is much worse. Alarming symptoms have appeared, and the worst is now feared by his physicians, who hold out but little hope of the President’s recovery.
