The Wade CaseThe Minister of Justice has replied to certain Wade settlers re the late smuggling case that the Government do not intend to institute further prosecutions out of the evidence disclosed, but the settlers interested can undertake the matter themselves. The Dangers of Eaipara. The pilot at Kaipara Heads is of opinion that the loss of the Bona on the West Coast was owing to there being no lighthouse on either of the Heads. GISBORNE, August 25. Good ProspectsThe visitors to the Southern Cross Company’s ground have returned, and report unlimited quantities of paraffin. At a general meeting of the Pacific Company a proposal for letting parts of the ground on tribute was negatived. Buchanan has declared himself as a candidate for the House of Representatives for the Wairarapa electorate. The Grain InterestDuring the present grain season over 300,000 sacks of grain have been forwarded by rail from different stations in the district. Fire. The private residence of Mr John Hayhurst near Temuka, was almost totally destroyed by fire this afternoon. The loss will be very heavy, as there was no insurance.
