A meeting of the Borough Council was held at noon to-day, when the following resolution was passed “ That this Council protests against the action taken by the House in demanding the suspension of our harbor works until next session, and consider it injudicious and unwise, taking into consideration the value of the work done, plant, and the material on the land, and also the perishable material contracted for and now on the road from London, and the necessity which will arise for erecting costly buildings for the protection of the machinery and the storage of
Ithe plant and material, which will entail a heavy loss to this place and the colony. It will also have the effect, directly and indirectly, or throwing tome hundreds of men out of employment, to whom this Council can offer no hope of relief. Many will bo utterly destitute, having invested their all in small properties under tho belief of constant employment. The effect of the suspension of the works will also be to throw this district back some years, and may, in consequence, cause a harbor rate to be necessary, which will be manifestly unjust to the ratepayers at large.” Meetings have also been held" at Oboto and Mhngorei, where resolutions condemning the conduct of the House have been passed, which will be forwarded to the members.
