THE MAYORALTY.
So far as can be seen, the citizens of Christchurch will not have a very extended choice in the matter of the election of Mayor for the ensuing year. Up to the present only one candidate—Cr. Ayers—has definitely announced his intention of contesting the election, and another —Cr. Taylor—has signified his willingness to come forward if asked. It is announced also that the present Mayor will seek reelection. Without wishing ia any way to reflect upon the gentlemen, named above, we certainly think that a city like Christchurch has a right to command tho services of gentlemen of the very highest ability and social standing. One grave reason for this is, that the character of the Council rises or deteriorates according to the status of the chief magistrate of the city. Therefore it is, that whilst willing to give these gentlemen every credit for good intentions we hope to see some one or other of onr leading citizens come forward. Surely the office of Mayor of Christchurch is sufficiently honourable to excite laudable ambition, and we hope that, as on a former occasion, tho ratepayers will not be placed in the position of having their choice restricted.
