[EBB PBRS3 ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, August 19. Strike of Navvies. The navvies working on the Whangarei railway extension, under sub-contractor Ward, struck, owing to the employer wanting the men to work till five on Saturday, instead of the cuatomary hour, four o'clock. Mr Ward will send to Dunedin for men. The Wade Smugglers. The Wade smuggling case is finished, and judgment will bo given to-morrow.
Sporting.
The programme for the summer meeting of the Auckland Club is out. The stakes are increased in most races, and there is £250 more added money than last year. The Agitators Again.
A public meeting was held re the railway reclamation scheme. Resolutions were passed protesting against the action of the Government, and demanding that a sum should be placed on the ejtirnates to complete tho work, and keep flood faith with tho public. Fire.
A four roomed cottage at Newmarket, unoccupied, belonging to Mr L. B. O. Turner was found on fire cx'srnally at midnight by constable Doas, who suppressed the fire. The building was insured in the Colonial office for £l5O. The police, on inspection, were satisfied that it was an attempt at. incendiarism. New Stock.
The directors of the Auckland Stud Company have received a telegram informing them that three- Clydesdales have been put onboard tho etcatr.or Afghan at London. The animals are a Etallion and two mares. For the former was paid tho largo price of £1.500 and for each of the mares £750. DUNEDIN, August 19. A Lively SceneA meeting of Mr S. Clayton's creditors was held to-day, whan tho debtor was present, and a lively ex£.mir,atijn resulted. Questions were asked him by some of the creditors whether Mr Guthrie, of Guthrie and Larnach, was a partner v.l\h him. Mr Clayton said that ho would have to examine documents bofcre roplyirg. Mr H. Macneil, of Briscoe and Co., interfered in the examination, making somo remark to Mr R. H. Deary, creditcru' trustee, who was examining, which tho latter considered reflected on him, when Mr Deary look Mr Macneil by the collar, and gave him a severe shaking. He then ordered him out (tho meeting being held at Mr L?ary's offices), and Mr Macneil, in going said ho would heir more of it. The meeting then adjourned till Monday. Mining Strike.
The directors of the Cromwell Quartz Mining Company, in which the strike existed some time ago, have given instructions to have operations resumed.
