A Bio Land Buying Schemes —Oo Thursday night about thirty residents of Lyttelton met in the Church of England oohoolroom, at Port, and formed an associa tion cahed "Lmd Ho! Association, No. 1." Mr Alex. Joyce, the author of a pamphlet, ■recently published, entitled "L'ind Ho!" addressed tho meeting, being introduced by Mr E. C. Brown, tho chairmrn. Briefly stated, tho object of tho association is to so cure the return to Parliamout of a man pledged to advocate the nationalisation of the whole of the land m the colony ; that is, that •the Government shall purchase every inch of ground which is now held by private individuals, and the improvements thoreon, thus abolishing altogether every tenure known aa freehold in land, whether tewn or oountry. In other words, every person occupying lands or houses wculd have the same landlord — namely, the Government, from whom they would rent oz- lease. Subletting by individuals is prohibited. Mr H. J. Sealey, the author of a pamphlet on the land question, was pre.-ent, at the moating, and gave a doleful aooount of the state of business down about Oimaru and Timaru, stating that the shops in those towns wero shutting up for want of trade, and the people leaving by hundreds. The alleged exodus cf the population, and the depression in bußinees in the places named, ho considered was somehow due to tho existence of large estates held by private landowners. He said a similar condition of affiirs existed in Hawke's Bay, 'Nelson, and Marlborough provinces. In aldition to the above a largo amount of formal business was dono ; alio certain matters was dealt with in committee. ThBATBB Boyal.—" My Partner " was repeated most suoce3sfuily last night at the Theatre Boyal. Mr Leake confirmed tho ,-good opinion already formed of his acting, and has already established himself as a great favorite with his audience. Mr Hamilton's Major Butt is a piece of character acting which it would bo difficult to surpass anywhere, and the reßt of tho parts, especially Mr Wallace as Soragg?, wore lillod efficiently. Thoro is just one objection to the piece as presented, which was omitted to be noticed yesterday, and that is the introduction of each character by a strain of music, sad for the Lero and heroine, and defiant for the villain. This is perfectly in accordance with stagy traditions, but quite opposed to what takes place in every day life, and this detracts from the realism or the play No one objects to " The last Roso cf Summer" or " The Heart bowed down" in their proper place, bnt, it wculd bo eomowhat inconvenient if, bb pourtrayed in tho piece, one had to procure theso airs to be played each time on entering or leaving a room. To aay nothing of aDy other matter, the expense of beeping a band on the premises would bo a serious item. It U to be hoped that in future tho management will allow the characters in the pieoe to make their entrances and exits like ordinary mortals. The piece will bo repeated this evening, and is well worth aeeing.
