[Bx Teleqbaph.] [Per as. Ringarooma, at tho Bluff.] ["Aoh" Specials.] LONDON, August 9. A destructive explosion hau occurred at a cartridgo factory at Perpignan, a thriving town in tho South of France, and the capital of tha dopartment of the Eastern Pyrenees. Eleven persons were injured, and there wes much damage of property. The causo of the accident is not known. Serious anli- Jowish riots havo taken place at Jastrow, a town of Western Prussia, where a largo proportion of the population are Jews. During the disturbances, a clergyman named Scholling wiis dangerously maltreatod. Order was restored with difficulty. Tho sou ling matches for the championship of England have boen fixod to take place in Soptember. August 10.
An early prorogation of Parliament is anticipated. Tho Ministerial whitobait dinner has beon fixed to take place on Wednesday next, August 17th. A growing feeling of dissatisfaction with tho existing free trade policy of England is being mani!'cstod, especially in tho manufacturing districts. An active agitation has been oofc on foot, and throughout tho country protectionist literature is being distributed broadcast. A largo public meeting has been held in London, at Exeter Hall, whore speeches were delivered protesting against tha maintenance of tho froo trade policy established by Cobdon as 'one- now unsuited to the position of Great Britain, in view of the prevalence of protectionist principles iu other countries.
The death is announced of Dr. Tanner, the New York physician, who last year fulfilled tho self-imposed task of fasting forty days. His modicil attendants Etato that there is no doubt that the strain to tho system caused by his long abstention from food hastened his doa'.h.
August 11. A highly interesting exhibition has boon opened in Purie, under the supervision of some leading French scientists, illustrating the development of electricity in all its most modest applications. Some most wondorful inventions are exhibited, a novelty which has attracted universal attention.
A great landslip has taken placo in Virginia, United States, causing very considerable destruction of property. Seven Nogroos wero killed. Much dissatisfaction exists among the sailors employed in the port of London, who complain of the low rate of wages and other grievances. A strike is threatened unless their domands are acceded to by the shipmasters. During the paet day or two, the sailors, in order to draw publio attention to their case, have marched in prccossion in largo numbers through the streets.
