The Bona was commanded by Captain Kenneth Mackenzie, part owner, who has had charge since the vessel was built two and a half years a go. Ho has a wife and four children residing in Oamaru. The names of the crew are Robert Smith, Noil Carmichael, Charles Johnson, and W. Eagle. The vessel is insured for £4OO ; only about half her value. D. H. Mackenzie owns half tho interest. young children and an alarm of fire. On entering the house they found Oraig had tied his feet to a colonial sofa, on which he was lying. He had get fire to a quantity of tow ho had collected upon him. They tried to pull him from the couch, but he resisted strongly, holding the wooden bars at the head so that they broke away with him. He was then got from the burning couoh, and laid on the floor, which is charred where ho lay. Oraig died at nine o’clock on Monday, before Dr. Edgelow arrived from Hamilton. Brutal AssaultA case of brutal illtreatment of a wife has just como to light hero. Briefly stated, the facts are these :—On tho 3rd instant an unfortunate woman, whoso name is Isabella Augustus, wife of a Swede named Charles Augustus, a laboring man, was confined. Five days afterwards Augustus grossly illtreated the woman, and refused to permit her to call in a doctor or allow her any assistance. This conduct, coupled with threats upon her life, was continued until Tuesday last, when the case of the unfortunate woman became known, and sho was removed to the hospital. She was then found to be in a critical condition. Information was at once laid against Augustus, and ho was arrested yesterday on a charge of assault.
