New Zealand securities continue at the following quotations ;—Five per Cent 10-40 Loan, 105; Five per Cent. 1889 Loan, 1041; Four and a half per Cent. 1879-1904 Loan, 1011, ex div. Adelaide and New Zealand breadstnffs continue firm at 52s for Adelaide wheat, 38s for Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, and 5s 6d for New Zealand wheat, ex ship. Australian tallow is unchanged at 34s Gd for best beef and 36s 6d for best mutton. The Mails The homeward Australian mails, which left Melbourne on July sth, were delivered to-day. WASHINGTON, August 17. The President’s Health. This morning’s bulletin reports that President Garfield is still in a very critical state, hut his case is not considered hopless. CALCUTTA, August 17. The Ameer’s Movements. Telegrams are to hand to-day from Afghanistan reporting that the troops rocently despatched by the Ameer to Khelat-i-Ghelzai on the road between Cabul and Candahar, have now evacuated that place. The object of the movement has not transpired.
