Yesterday morning the men constructing the bridge on the road between Pungarehu and Ratiotu were stopped by Natives, who had assembled in groat numbers, and a messenger was at once despatched to Pungarehu, and the constabulary were ordered to proceed to the spot to protect the workmen. The Natives refused to leave after the Constabulary arrived. Mr Parris and Major Tuke were sent for, and they took their departure for the camp this morning. The reason that the Natives have obstructed the work is, they say, because the Government are encroaching upon their land.
