MORE WIFE THAN COUNTRY.
The other night (says an American paper) soon after a ward meeting had been opened, one ct the electors present began edging for the door sa if he meant to leave the place. He waß soon stopped by a friend, who said, ' Don't leave us now ; I want you to hear what that speaker is saying, Hear that! He Bays we must triumph or the oonntry 1b doomed.' ' Yes, I know, but I've got to edge along towards home ' was the reply. ' Home ! Great heavens, how can you talk of going home until he has finished that speech ! There be goes again ! He aßks if you want to Bee grass growing in the streets of our cities—our fertile farms returned to the wilderness—our families orowding to the poorhouees until there is no longer room to receive another !' ' No, I don't know as I would ; but I guess I'll sorter work my way out.' ' Wait fifteen minutes—ten —fivewait until he finishes. There It is again. He asks whether you are a freeman or a slave- He wants to know whether you have forgotten the patrfotic principles defended by the blood of your grandeires—if you have forgotten the sound of liberty bell ?' "J. don't know as I have, but I mußt go—really I must.' 'Hear that—bear that 1 He says this country will bless you.' ' I can't say as to that,' replied the man as he crowded along; ' but I'm dead sure that the old woman will if I don't get home in time to put this codfish to soak for breakfast.' 1 Great guns ! but do you prefer bodfiah to liberty?' exc'aimod the other. 'I don't know as I do, but I get more of It.' 'And yoa will see this country ruined ; see her go to destruction ?' 'l'd be kinder Borry to see her go down hill,' slowly observed the delinquent as he reached the door ; ' but if you had a wife who could begin jawing at ten o'clock and not lobo a minute until daylight, and then' end up with a grand smash of crockery and a fit of hysterics, you'd kincW stand off ae I do, and let this glorious old Republic equ:3ze through the best way it could.'
