NEWS OF THE DAY
Lotteries.—A potition against the parsing of the Gaming and Lotteries Act is being circulated in Christchurch, and has already received a considerable number of signatu-er.
Bbnbmt.—Tonight Mr B. W. Caiy, who is well known bora, but more particularly as the entrepreneur of " The Pirates oE Penzance," will take a benefit. The bill arranged is a most attractive one, comprising as it does tho first act of " Pinafore" and the whole of " The Pirates of Penzance." In the latter pieoe Mr Oary will resume his character of the Pirate Eiutr, Mr Wentworth taking that of the Major- General. As the bill is a lengthy one, the performance will commence punctually at 7.45 p.m. Late trains to Lyttelton and trams to Papanui running tonight, no doubt many country residents w ; U take the opportunity of visiting the Theatre.
U.A.O. DRUIDB. —The usual fortnightly meeting of the Oak of Sydenham Lodge was held last evening, in St. Saviour's schoolroom, Sydenham, A.D. Bro. Barnett presiding. There was a fair attendance of members, also of visiting brothers. The loige being opened, the delegates re Centenary Celebration made their report, whioh was accepted. Bro. Diy resigned his office as treasurer, and Bro. A. Kerr was elected to that office. Bro. A. Bussell was then installed as 0.G., one candidate was initiated, and one proposed for membership. After a quantity of routine business had been transacted, the lodge was closed in due form.
Mbbivale Debating Society.—A meeting was held on Wednesday evening at the Merivale Schoolroom for the purpose of reforming the above society. The Bev. T. Flavell occupied the chair, and there was a large number present. A list of subjects to be debated was agreed upon, and the first debate arranged to take place on Wednesday evening next, when the subject, "Is it desirable to prevent Chinese immigration," will be discussed. The members present appeared to tube considerable interest in the proceedings, and the society promises to be a great auooess.
Want op Confidence Debate.—The debate on Mr Ormond's motion was adjourned at 10 45 last night, with the understanding that the'division would be taken this evening.
Lancaster Park _ Club.—The adjourned meeting for the formation of the proposed club for cricket, tennis, bowls, &c, will be held at the Commercial Hotel this evening at eight o'clock.
Bible Societt. —The annual meeting of the Canterbury auxiliary ef the British and Foreign Bible Society will be held this evening at the Oddfellows' Hall.
TempoSAe* Tbanspeb.—The license of the Albion Hotel was temporarily transferred from B. G. Plunder to W. A. Wood, at the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Ashley Election. —Already candidates are being named for this districh for the genei.il election. The names of Messrs J. Evans Brown, W. C. Fondall, and W. M. Maskell, have been mentioned as probable candidates.
1.0.0. F., M.U., Kaiapoi.—At the summoned meeting of this lodge on Tuesday evening a discussion took place on the question of the arrangement of accounts in such a form as would satisfy the distriot officers. Finally the matter was settled in a satisfactory way.
Oantebbuby Bugby Union.—A meeting of the Canterbury Bugby Union was held on Tuesday evening last. Present—Messrs Herman (in the chair), Anderson, Stringer, Hay, Parker, Ellis, and Millton. It was resolved that a letter should be written to the seoretary of the Wellington Union to ascertain whether it was still the intention of tho Auokland footballers to visit Wellington. Messrs Harman, Stringer, Dixon, Evans, and Hartland were elected a seleotion committee to ohoose the team for the interprovincial match, and to make arrangements for trial games. It was also decided to send to the secretary of each club belonging to the Union, and desire him to send in to the seleotion committeo the names of any members of hia club who might be considered fit to play in the match. Practices will be held on Cranmer square every morning at seven o'clock, and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings at 4 30. It is to be hoped that all who desire to get places in the representative team will turn up regularly, and that all others who wish to see Canterbury victorious will give bb much assistance as lies in their power by joining in the practices.
Abhbubton B.M. Court.—At this Cour 1 before Mr J. N. Nugent Wood, 8.M., Mib Wilkie applied for an order to protect her earnings and goods, and the custody of three children, under the Married Women's Property Protection Act, on the ground of her husband's alleged habitual drunkenness. Mr O'Beilly appeared for Mrs Wilkie. Dafendant conducted his own case. After hearing the evidence, whioh was of a contradictory nature, the Magistrate dismissed the case, remarking that it was one which should never have come into Court.
Gantebbuby Athletic Club.—A committee meeting of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club was held at the Commercial Hotel on Wednesday evening, to consider the terms offered the club by tho Cricket and Athletio Sports Association for the use of their ground. After discussion, the terms were accepted, conditionally. The general meeting was fixed for 7th September, when the report of the sub-committee with regard to the Ladies' Challenge Cap will be received.
Football. The following fifteen of the C.F.C. will play the rest of the club on Saturday next. Play to commence at 2.45 :E. Cotterill, G. Helmore, A. H. Anderson, A. Chapman, J. Boys, W. Millton, C. Bolton, W. Potta, J. Hartland, C Dobson, L. Ollivier, B. Harman, Wynn Williams, L. Lane, and E. Knight. The club will be captained by Mr M. Lewin. The following will represent the Pilgrims in their match against the North Canterbury Club on Saturday next, at Bangiora. Messrs Henry, Winter, Brunt, Keutoven, Fuller (captain), Atack, Blakely, Bowley, De Castro, Ellis, Fuller, J. Hilla, Shind, Moule, Woledge. Emergencies: I Wright, Lavery, Hinge, and Bosa. Tho above are requested to meet at the New Post Office at 12.30 p.m. sharp to meet drag. Any of the above who are unable Ito play are requested to inform the secretary. Colors : Qold and black.
