EDUCATION BOARD

A meeting of the Education Board for the district of North Canterbury was hold at the offices of the Board yesterday afternoon at. three o’clock. Present —Mr Inglia (chairman), and Messrs Cunningham, Peryman, Booth, Bev. Ohas. Eraser, H. J. Tancrod. A report of the business transacted by the chairman since lust meeting was read and approved. Reports from tho Inspectors on schools at Governor’s Bay, Bcocksi.de, Dunsanciel, Selwyn, and others were laid on the table. A letter was road from tho head of the department, approving of a proposal to establish classes for tho instruction of teachers on Saturdays, A letter from the Christ College Grammar School authorities, admitting that the school is subject to Government inspection. Mr Barnett, master of Governor’s Bay school, wrote, eneljs: M g copies of a now series of copy books, with tho request that they be forwarded to the department in Wellington. Resolved to accede to the request. The seal of the Board was ordered to bo attached to three certificates of training granted to students of tho Normal School. A letter was read from the East Christchurch School Committee, recommending the appointment of Mr T. W. Austin to tho Bingslund school; Mr E. A. Just to the second mastership of the main school, vice Mr Austin. After consideration tho Board resolved_ to write to the committee expressing their opinion that the second master of the Main school should possess a higher certificate that Mr Just possesses. No dissent was expressed from the recommendation as to the appoint, ment to the Bingsland school, but it was understood that the matter generally would remain in abeyance. From the Alford Forest committee a letter was read making recommendations as to the conduct of the school, including one suggestion that a male instead of a female teacher should bo appointed to the side school. The Secretary was instructed to reply, informing the committee what would be the salary of the master, viz , £l3O, less 10 per cent., and that there would be no chance of a master’s house being built for a long time. The seal of the Board was ordered to be attached to an agreement with Me Douglas for leasing rural section 11454 near Amberley. Some applications from school committees for repairs were considered and dealt with, as well as other matters of a routine character. This concluded the business transacted in open Board.
