The leading members of the league consider that this amount is insufficient to enable them to defeat the landlords, and they ask for further contributions. June 30. Notwithstanding the vigorous measures taken by the Eussian Government to suppress Nihilism, the movement continues to spread, A special branch organisation has lately been established with the object of punishing all persons who are discovered acting as spies upon the operations of the party. Public feeling in Italy continues to be greatly excited, owing to the action of the French Government on the Tunisian question, and anti-French riots of a serious character have occurred at Venice, Great efforts have been made by the United States Government during the past year to reduce the national debt, and a reduction of 100 OOO.OOOdoIs has been effected. July 3.
The Fenian movements in England are causing considerable anxiety, and the police authorities are tracing them out with the utmost vigilance. The Fenians have threatened to blow up Hawarden Castle, Flintshire, the residence of Mr Gladstone, and Eaton Hall, Ohesire, the seat of the Duke of Westminster. Earl Oowper, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, has issued an order prohibiting a meeting which had been projected for the purpose of obstructing sheriffs’ sales.
The Empress of Germany, whose health had been improving for the past few days, has undergone a serious relapse, and her condition causes great anxiety at the Imperial Court and throughout the country. At the recent elections in Hungary the Liberals obtained a majority of fifty seats. The Spanish Government has offered to make important concessions in the Customs duties levied upon imports from England, provided the latter will make a reduction upon the duties now charged upon Spanish wines.
The French mission to Abyssinia has been attacked by the natives. A Volunteer rifle match held at Dublin resulted in a victory for the English team, which defeated the Irish by 33 points. A gold medal, presented by the Commissioners of the Melbourne Exhibition to the Queen, has been handed to Her Majesty by Mr Sandford, the representative of the British lloyal Commissioners. The second volume of Duffey’s work on “ Young Ireland” will bo ready for publication iu Nov. mber.
The Belgium Telephone Company have made arrangements so that any of the subscribers leaving word any evening may be awakened at any hour the next morning by means of a powerful alarm. “ Tea,” said a great traveller,” “ get the St. Bernard if you want a good dog. Thousands of times have I seen this noble animal in the bitter cold carrying its frozen master by the alack of his trousers over the highest mountains of Europe. The truth isn’t half told about these superb creatures.”
