NEWS OF THE DAY.
1.0.G.T. New Viotoet Lodge, No. 245. —The usual weekly meeting of the aboTe Order took place at the Templar Hall, Worcester street, on Thursday, the Bth inst. After the usual opening ceremonies, three now members were initiated. There being a good attendance of the lodge, also many members from other lodges, addresses were given by Bro. Bmith, D.D., from Lyttelton, Bro. Bennett, Bro. Gray, D.D., and Bro. Olephane. Four new members were proposed. The lodge is having members added very fast, it now numbering nearly sixty. Inquest.—An inquest was held this day at noon before Dr. Frankish and a jury, of whom Mr Peter Rental was chosen foreman, touching the death of Bosanna Mcßegney, a little girl nine years of age, daughter of Mr Mcßegney, residing in Sydenham. The particulars of the uccident through which the child died has been published. After hearing the evidence, the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony of Dr. Brittan, to the effect that the child died from a shock, the result of extensive bums. Theater Royal.—On Tuesday night next Mr Carey's Opera Company will commence a season at the Theatre Hoyal, when Gilbert Sullivan's comic opera, the " Pirates of Penzance," will be produced for the first time in Christchurch. Local Government.—ln reply to a question by Sir G. Grey in the House, yesterday afternoon, the Hon. Major Atkinson said that he would make his promised statement as to loeal government on Tuesday evening. Sheep Wobeying.—On Wednesday about nine sheep in a flock belonging to Mr George Edwards, Okair, near Kaiapoi, were worried to death by dogs, and several others were injured. St. Stephen's Church, Abhbubton.—On Wednesday evening the Rev. A. W. Hands lectured on the translation of the Bible by Tyndale, and on subsequent revisions. Nearly sixty persons were present. Railway Band.—At a meeting of the Railway Band, held at the Terminus Hotel last night, it was unanimously agreed that the band pay a visit to the Dunedin Industrial Exhibition. HBNT. —While referring to the bonus for distribution amongst insurers in the G-overn- • ment Insurance Department, Major Atkinson stated in the House yesterday, that a Bill was in course of preparation with the object of ' handing over the control of the department : to a Board. AsHßr/ETON Old Men's Home.—At an entertainment at the Home on Wednesday evening the Rev. W. Keall presided. The Wesleyan choir rendered several selections, Miss Hodder kindly acting as accompanist. Amongst the amateur performers were Mies Carson, and Messrs Andrews, K. Crisp, i Dixon, Dunn and Hodder. DIOCESAN SUNDAY SCHOOH ASSOCIATION. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above i was held in Bt. Michael's Schoolroom last night, when the Hev. W. C. Harris delivered a lecture on " Examination of Sunday School Scholars." There was a good attendance, and the lecture was listened to with great interest. Prebblbton Domain Boabd. —At a. meeting of this Board held on the 4th inst. It was decided (o get up » concert to obtain funds to place the grounds in order, and to subsoil a portion of the belt, and plant trees. With the view of making the concert a success, it was resolved that the Prebbleton Cricket Club be invited to co-operate. The concert will take place on the sth August at the schoolroom. Education Boaed.—The Board held its ordinary meeting yesterday, when there was a considerable pressure of business, occupying over three hours, after which the Board went into committee. The report of the scholarship examinations was brought up, and is published in another column. Safe Hosts.—Mr W. Auchinaehie, recently living at Amberley, who was supposed by some of his friends to have been lost in the Tararua, returned home on Wednesday evening. Owing fo delays in settling his business in the South, Mr Auchinachie's visit was lengthened, hence arose the fears that he was a passenger in the ill-fated vessel. Licensed Victfaixebs' Association.— A general meeting of the members of this association (Mr J. W. Morton in the chair) was held at Morion's Hotel last evening, at 7.30 o'clock. A considerable amount of business was done in connection with the Licensing Bill now before Parliament. The following letter from a prominent merchant in the city was read :—" I think it would be a great convenience to employer ani employed if some of the innkeepers ia Ohristchurch were to adopt the o)d London plan of notifying in a conspicuouu manner, 'House of call for carpenters,'or'House of call for bricklayers,' as the case may be. Men of each calling would leave their names and addresses at the house, and if out of employment would call there to know if inquiries have been made by employers, who would know where to go to make enquiry without having to run here and there for hands wanted immediately. It would also give the men in their respective c-illings a known place to meet for the discussion of business matters. Ido not allude to carpenters and bricklayers only, but painters, bakers, and other trades. Would you make (his suggestion at the next meeting of the Licensed Victuallers." The election of new members was proceeded with, and three elected. Rangioea Chitrch Entbetainmbnt.— The second entertainment of the series in connection with parochial matters was held in the school-room on Wednesday evening. There was a fair attendance, the Ven. Archdeacon Dudley presiding. In addition to a variety of songs and readings, there was a spoiling bee, the prizes at which were obtained by Mr G. Mannering and Miss Boyt.
Philosophical Society.—A well-attended meeting of members of the Canterbury Philo sophical Sooiety was held last evening, Professor Haast in the chair. A paper -was read by Professor Hntton on " Branchiate Mollusca, and a somewhat lengthy discussion took place on a motion by Mr Purnell, suggesting the advisability of sending an expedition to explore the South Polar regions. The motion wh not carried. The following new members were elected :—Messrs T. O. Miller, 8. H. Beager, F. Jones, Rev. J. Westbrook and Dr. "Wilkin. Thh Ohbbeib Bhipmbht.—lt will be fresh in tho recollection of our readers that tho Akaroa Farmers' Association forwarded an •xtensive shipment of cheese to London by the New Zsaland Shipping Company's ves«el Orari, in which a special chamber was fitted up for its reception. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have just been advieed that the venture has not resulted successfully, tho entire shipment having arrived in an unmarketable condition. It is explained that this is due to original defects in the manufacture of the oheeae, by the character of the packing cases, and mainly to the storage arrangements. This result is very much to be regretted, but it is to be hoped that the venture will at least show what is actually nocensary for the development of the trade, and we shall await with some curiosity detailed reports bearing on this point. Kaiapoi PioirsHiya Match. Special prizes have been offered for this match by Mr J. O. Porter to the value of £5 for the best work done on the ground among those ploughmen who have never comneted at a match, and who will at tho forthcoming one enter among the others of similar classes of men or boys. If thore are three such competitors the fir. t prize will be £2, second £l, third 10s, and 30s wiil be divided in the boys' class. At Mr Porter's desire there will be no additional entrance fees oharged. The ground committee of this match meet on Wednesday afternoon to lay off the ground, and if necessary a meeting of the committee will be held the same evening at the Farmers' Olub Chambers.
Out of Q.tjakantinb.—The Hay family, steerage passengers for Sydney a short time since by the e.g. Wakatipu, and who were placed in quarantine on their arrival here from Dunedin suffering from measlee, wore released on Tuesday last from Bipa Island, and left yesterday by the Bingarooma. Mr Hay expressed his utmost satisfaction and thanks for the manner in which the Union Company provided for himself and family while they were in quarantine, the agent of the company, Mr Puflett, having, he said, behaved in the most generous manner in attending to their necessities.
