The police took the hardkerohief away, but she made a similar a'.i mpt afterwards with a garter. School PetitionA petition bearing 1234 names was sent to Wellington to-day against any ohange in the constitution of the Grammar School Board of Governors. Mill Accident. A young man named Mclvor was seriously wounded while eawing timber at Guthrie and Larn&ch's mill at Manukau Heads. A Bank Robber. H. Barfield was sentenced to four years' imprisonment for attempted robbery at the National Bank at Tauranga. WELLINGTON, July 7. Another Steamer Quarantined. The steamer Wakatipu arrived from Sydney at 3 o'clock this afternoon, and was immediately placed in quarantine. She has a good number of passengers, and made a good trip down. The health cfficer visited the vessel, and reported no sickness on board, and the passengers have been landed at the quarantine station. The mails are in course of fumigation, and will be landed at daylight to-morrow. Earthquakes Again. Two slight but distinct shocks of earthquake were felt hero about 6 o'clook this morning. Sculling. The steamer Huia has been chartered to follow the sculling race botween White and Hearn, and the people of Wellington are anxious to back Hearn, but as yet little betting has been done, and 5 to 4 is freely offered on Hearn without finding an acceptor. Several sporting men have telegraphed to Auckland endeavoring to get money on, but the replies are that not a pound can be got against Hearn. Both men are in good condition, and a spirited contest is anticipated. Two other rowing matches take place the same afternoon. Weather Telegrams. Intercolonial weather exchange.—" Sydney Wednesday evening—The weather is fine all over Australia, the barometer ranging from 30.4 at Echuca to 30 2 at Sydney. The depression reported at Perth on the 2nd inst. has not appeared to the eastward. The gale of Saturday last in New Zealand was the gale of Eastern Australia, reported on the previous Wednesday." DTTNEDIN, July 7. Impertinence. The Grand Lodge of Good Templars here have telegraphed to the Colonial Secretary their disappointment at his expressing sympathy while in Dunedin, with the grocers who wish the bottle licenses re-inserted in the Licensing Bill. Promoters at Work. Three new financial companies are in course of formation here, one having a capital of £250,000. A large portion of their business is to be to relieve trustees and executors from the management of properties and estates on commission. Such companies are in successful operation at the Capo of Good Hope, Melbourne, and Adelaide. School AttendauceNinetoen thousand four hundred and four children attended the Otago schools during the June quarter. Towards the end of the quarter the number decreased by 1373, owing to the prevalence of measles; 1000 being j absent in the city schools alone. Only 200 j children under school ago attend the Otago ' schools.
