0.F.0. t. PILGRIMS. The above match -was played on Saturday, on the ground of the former, the Pilgrims playing one man short, and taking on no less than five emergencies, owing to those members who were picked not turning up. The Christchurch, who wore red and black, were captained by Boulton, and the Pilgrims, wearing gold and black, by F. Fuller, who, winning the toss, chose the southern goal, thus gaining the advantage of a slight wind then blowing. Boulton kicked off for the Rede, the ball being immediately returned by Henry, and the Golds, following up well, at once rushed it well into the Reds twenty-five yards, Kestevan, after some very tough scrimmages, securing a touch-down for th. Golds. The try at goal was a failure. On the ball being kicked off, the Reds, by some good runs, got the ball well into the Golds’ quarters, where a lot of serin mages took place, the ball eventually going itPo touch. It was smartly thrown out to Dobson, who ran in and secured a touch-down for the Beds, the try at goal being fruitless. Time was called shortly after this without either side gaining any further advantage. On resuming play, Bowley kicked off for the Golds, driving the ball well into the Reds’ quarters, where it remained a long while, until Beswick, getting hold of it, made a pood run, and, on being collared, passed to Dobson, who got dangerously near the Golds’ goal line. The Golds, however, managed to hold their ground fora long time, but Hartland, getting hold of the ball, ran in and secured the second touch-down for the Reds, which Harman, by a splendid kick, converted into a goal. Henry, starting play by a good kick, the ball was kept well in the middle of the ground until Morgan, getting the ball, made a good run, and being well backed up by his side ran the ball right on the Golds’ goal line, Harman soon after securing tho third touch-down for the Reds. The try at goal was, however, a failure. The third and last spells were very evenly contested, acme very good play and runs being shown on both sides, Fuller deserving credit for a good run in the last spell, which no doubt saved his side from further defeat. On time being called the Beds remained victors by one goal and two tries to one try. For the Rede Hannan (as back), Beswick and Morgan (half-backs) played well, while Hartland, Boulton, Williams, and Dobson played a hard forward game. For the Golds Heery and Winter (as backs) and Puller and Kestevan (as quarters) did their side good service. Wright, Shand, Blakely, Hinge, and Blanchard played well forward.
