[PBE PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, July 1. Endorsement. The Auckland Racing Club have endorsed the decision of the Dunedin Jockey Club re J. Harding and the mare Miss Domett. Boring. The boring plant for the Southern Cross Petroleum Company at Gisborne came by the City of Sydney, and was sent on by the Aotomahana. Increasing. At the first half-yearly meeting of the Provident Building and Investment Society the report showed an increase of business. Special Settlement. Mr Henry Palmer, of Mahurangi, is purchasing blocks of Native land with a view to forming a special settlement of Irish settlers. WELLINGTON, July 1. Frozen Tucker. A meeting of gentlemen interested in the export of frozen meat and dairy produce was held at Parliament Building this afternoon, several members of Parliament being present. It was decided to form a company with a capital of £20,000 in £5 shares. The promoters, so far as they are at present able to decide, propose to make arrangements for the shipment of as many cargoes as possible in 1882. A large and influential provisional directory was appointed to take the necessary steps for the successful floating of the company. It is intended to register the company as soon as 1000 shares have been applied for. Revenue. The Customs revenue for the month amounted to £l4 904, and for the quarter to £46,229. HOKITIKA, July 1. West Coast Railway. A very large public meeting was held in the Town Hall this evening to urge upon the Government the necessity for completing tho Hokitika-Grey railway, the Hokitika harbor works, and the Mikonui water race. The following resolution was carried—“ That in view of the large sums of public money already expended upon the Hokitika-Grey railway, Hokitika harbor works, and the Mikonui water race, the noncompletion of which renders snob expenditure valueless (excepting in the case of the harbor works), and in view of the great benefit that would accrue to this district and the colony generally, this meeting strongly urges the Government to take steps to complete the same, so as to retain and increase the population, and develope the chief industries of the country.” It was resolved to telegraph copies of the above to the Premier, the Minister for Public Works and Mines, and the representatives of the district.
GBETMOUTH, July 1. Returns. The Customs duties collected at Groymouth last month were £2637, and for the corresponding month in 1880, £3728. The Customs for the Juno quarter were £7731, and for the corresponding quarter in 1880, £9542. The gold duty for the quarter amounted to £1702. TIMARU, July 1. Tho Customs revenue collected at the port of Timaru last month was £1584. The returns for tho quarter show a large increase over last year. Forty-four births, nine marriages, and fifteen deaths were registered in Timaru during Juno. DUNEDIN, July 1. Good News, There are no fresh cases or signs of small pox on board the Charles Worsley. SpecialsTwo hundred people arrived by tho special exhibition train from Christchurch and elsewhere to-day. Dunedin is agog with excitement over the torchlight procession to-night. Supposed LibelCertain charges having been made against the town clerk, the City Council yesterday decided that it was necessary that he should prosecute the person making them for libel. Correction. Messrs Robert Neill and John Boyd are the purchasers of Koasfc and McCarthy’s brewery, not Messrs Neal Bros., as reported yesterday.
