The Oddfellows' Hall was crowded last evening on the occasion of a conoort in aid of the Ancit nt Order of Druids. The programme was a very attractive one, the major portion of the items being rendered by the Sydenham Amateur Musical Bociety. Miss Collins gave " Must we meet as strangers " in a very orcditablo manner. " Tho Bay of Biscay" was given by Mr Robinson with much precision. Messrs Matthews, Kirk and Kerr were very amusing in their comic sinking, tho latter especially coming in for a *arce share of applause. Qr/orra at Ashburton. —A match was flayed on Weclneiday lost at the Spread Eagle Cotel, Ashburton Forks, between the Ashburton and Mount Somcrs Clubs. After a tong and closely contested struggle, the Mount Somers team won by four games against their opponents' three. The visiting team were hospitably entertained at an excellent luncheon. The return match will be played at Ashburton. A Bimplb Life Buoy.—lt appears strane, (says a contemporary) that a remarkably •implo kind of life buoy, patented a fow years ago, seems to have gone the way of many patents of less importance. It is a knitted woollen mufller of such length as to go onco round the neoi. Anyone can wear tho article without being twitted with being over-care-ful of his life, as it has all the appearance of an ordinary soarf. If tbe wearer has occasion to use it as a life saving apparatus all that is necessary is to put a small tube, which projects from ono of the endr,.to the mouth and blow iuto it. Iq an instant a thin rubber bag concealed inside the scarf 3wells up and oontains sufficient air to flout a man easily. Being close round the neck there is no risk of it shifting and becoming a life-deatroyor aa somo of these inventions are. The tube oontains a " pou " valve which is self-acting ; therefore all that is required in an emergency is sufficient wind to fill the bag, which then assumes the appearance of o portly German sausnge. Tirs Titanic Steel Company. At a aieeting held on Monday evening, tho Dunsdin shareholders of the Now Zealand Titanic Steel and Iron Company agreed to surrender their grant of 5000 aorco of land for £3OOO, and also paeßed a resolution in favor of winding up the company. The " Daily Times" remarks :—" A moro utter failure tb.»n this company, which started with such a glowing prospectcs, h;ia been could hardly be imagined. ' The eum at £30,000 has been expended fruit lesaly, and the asßots Ere likely to bo, from aalo of ground and plant, £SOOO. The company manufactured, instead of its thousands of tons of iron and steel yearly, just 30cwt of iron, and that cost to manufacture, counting nothing for plant, over £SOO. The shareholders at tho meeting seemed to gather comfort from tho fact that the miserable existence of the company is likely soon to terminate.

Moss Dynamite Expbeimbnts —An at • tempt to blow up the mili'ia barracks at Chester was made one night last week. An explosion occurred which aroused the neighborhood, and on making search it was found to procsod from the north-west corner of the building, wbero a large quantity of powder had been exploded under tho women's washhouse and in cloeo proximity to the guardroom. The remnants of a blaok leather portmanteau were found en tho spot, and it is surmised that a bag full of ponder was hung against the wall. The principal force of the explosion appears to have been exerted a few feet from the ground. The fuse employed of which remnants remain among the burnt and jagged remains of the portmanteau, appears to have been a slow combustion fuse, that might havo been burning a considerable time before the explosion occurred, allowing tho persons who placed it there ample time to escape. The only damoga done wa* the blackening of the wall. Tho spot selected was an aDglo which protects anyone there from view from the road. Thero is no olue to the culprit. Two men were arrested on auspioion who were afterwards released.— "Home News," May 19th. Evans, Blanchard, Hyman, and Eawkes. Color, black. Any of the above who are unable to play will kindly communicate with the secretary. Thb Chanwbli Ttohel. —The preliminary operations in connection with the boring of the proposed Channel Tunnel have, says a home paper, been attended with tho most gratifying results. No serious impediment has as yet presented itself, and although that part of the work which is likely to bo fraught with the greatest amount of risk and difficulty has yet to be encountered, there appears to be no reason why the fondest hopes of the speculators, despite predictions to the contrary, may not even now be realised, and the travelling portion of the public reap tho benefit of a scheme which, to say the least of it, will effectually remove the unploasant sensations and the inconvenience which is so often experienced in a passage aoross "the silvery streak." The boring advanoes at the rate of about 25ft per day of ten hours, and has already been carried to a distance of above 300 yards. The idea is to continue until a depth of some 200 ft below the bed of the channel is reached. It is then confidently hoped by geologists that tho character of the geological formations will admit of tho engineering operations being advanced in a direct line or level, so as to allow of a corresponding rise on tho other side of the channel. The operations are carried on under the direotion of Colonel Beaumont, the ohalk being cut by a disc furnished with cutters, which is worked by one of that gentleman's compressed air engines. The disc makes two revolutions per minute, slicing off tho chalk to tho thickness of a quarter of an inch at each revolution. There ii r,o change in the soil, whioh is still grey «halk, and there is a remarkable freedom from the perool&tion of water.
Two strangers were conversing on the oars. Both had seen "Balvini" "I shall never forget that. ' OfchoUo,' said one. " The man who played'lngo' discounted him," said the other. The first speaker wus thunderstruck. "O, I know genius when I see it," continued the party. " I am an india rubber man in the circus."—" Cincinnati Commercial."
