COURSING.
PAPANUI CLUB. The second meeting of this club was commenced yesterday on the farm of Mr Saunders, West Melton. It was nearly ten o'clock before the first dogs for tbo Leger were slipped, to a long course and a racing Imre. Fun led up, turned, and still maintained tbo load, driving to the fence, which the hare entered, both dogs following. Yaldhurst got in, but Fun came on, full of running, and wrested a well-tried course to her advantage. A long slip followed, in which. Batbello led to the hare, turning to Sea Foam, who held place only on sufferance, as the black slut came on with a rare turn of speed, keeping possession for the latter part of the course, and finally killing. A course ensued between Templeton and Master Sam. The slip was a bad one, the dogs being liberated in a gully ; what Bam might have done is unknown, as ho came to grief in a wire fence, and Templeton scored. Miss Bidley ran an accidental bye. Little Nell and Harcwood were next slipped, and the result was an undocide t course ; after which Bashful Maid and Deerfoot were liberated to a strong hare, the former leading up and turning to the dog, after which a series of exchanges resulted in the Maid scoring. The ensuing course, between Spy and Black Boy, was altogether in the former’s favour, ond she led gamely to a strong hare, and won as she liked. The next course was between Mr Piper's Lelci and Master Willie, and resulted in a bye for the latter, the reason being that Mr Piper was debarred from running his dog on the grounds that whilst a puppy and nnnam.d, he had broken from his former owner at a coursing meeting, and a £1 fine, unpaid, was recorded ogainst it, which, considering his former owner belonged to no club, seemed o somewhat arbitrary proceeding. After this, Blackbird ran a bye for the Members’ Plate. Messrs Beard and Tomlinson’s Bovor easily disposed of Gipsy. After which Prairie Bird and Olio each ran an accidental bye. The sport was anything but enjoyable, as hares were both scarce and wild.
