The brigantine Acnii Hill arrived yesterday from Bluff, with a cargo of timber for Mr B. H. Wood. She left there last Friday, and fell in with the heavy gale of Satnrday last. The direction of the storm waa first from the 5.»!., then from the S.S.K., and when off the Nugget 3 it came from the S.S.W. Daring tho gale a aea broke on beard that carried away part of tho vessel"* bnlwarks. Captain Arndt states that he has not seen so high a sea on the coast for years.
A MYSTEEIOUS WEECK. Some fishermen have reported the discovery of a suakon ship three milefl west half south of the Needles, and right in tho track of vessels bound for Southampton and the Solent, the Trinity Board, having no appliances of their own, claimed tho assistance of the Dockyard authoritiea at Portsmouth in having the obstruction removed. Accordingly H. M.'J, Sprightly, in command of Lieut. Wonham, who did good service in connection with the raising of tho Furydice, and having on board a number of divers from the Excellent, and a torpedo_ party from tho Vernon, under the direction of the Hon. Mr Bethel, proceeded to the wreck, "'ho ship was found lying in twelve fathoma of water, and with nothing visible but her topmasts. She proved to be an American brigantine of about 300 tona, laden or partly laden with petroleum and pitoh pine maats, tho square sails cf which were evidently aet when ahe sank. This waa all the information which could be obtained with reference to her, for although the divera made several deßcenta for the purpoae of aacertaining her name and learning the fate of the crew, their efforta proved nnsuccesaful, in con»eqnenco of the mnddinesa of the water and the cloudinesa of the weather. Meaaurea were afterwnrda taken to blow out the maata, a work which, becauae of the strong current, could only be proceeded with for half an hour at the dead alack of the tide. Small charges of dynamite were placed round tho two masts below the ringing", and when the heads of the maata were blown off the rigging and shrouds fell down, leaving the two lower masts unsupported. Larger charges of dynamite, contained in flexible baga, were placed round the maata at the point where they were stepped against tho weather deck, and these, on being fired, blew the maata about 30ft into the air, and with aa little injury to them as if they had been lifted out by mean aof a crane. Tho hull of the ship now lies with her head to tho southweatward, but ao deep down that there ia no danger to navigation. What tho ship ia, how ahe came to sink, and what became of her crew, aa they have not reported themselvea, remain at proaene mysterious. SHIPPING TELEGEAMS. Auckland, Jnne 27.
