The object is to prevent the school falling into tho hands of a clique. A Monster Circus. Private letters received by the last mail state that Gaylan's Colossal Circus, now doing splendid business in America, leaves in September for this oolony and Australia in a specially chartered steamer. The circus is said to be even larger and more complete than Cole's, and it has associated with it part of Barnam's celebrated museum of curiosities, as well as valuable menageries of animals. The chartered steamor will carry the circus from place to place, the season being a limited one. A Maniac Collerick, the telegraph operator, who attempted suicide at Whangaroa, got two bottles of chlorodyne, but these were found on him and taken away from him. He was to be brought down to be committed to the asylum. He says he is determined to commit suicide. Robbery. A robbery of £4OO has taken place from the Kauro Hotel, Whangarei. Found Drowned. At the inquest on the body of Mary Galvan, found drowned in the harbor, an open verdict was returned. Her husband was killed at Epsom some years ago. Release of the Mail Passengers. Dr. Skae, Inspector of Lunatic Asylums, who has been suffering from an attack of erysipelas, died to-day. He leaves a wife and large family. GBEYMOUTH, June 26. The Weather. A cold wave Bwept over Greymouth last night. It was raining abc-ut 8 o'clock, when a sudden chill took place, and a sharp hailstorm followed for some time. About halfpast eight it began to srovr heavily in large Hikes, and continued till about 11 30, when about three inches of snow covered tho roofs of the houses and other exposed places. It sot in cold about 1 o'clork, nv.d in the morning the snow which had fallen in the night was frozen hard. A heavy sea has been rolling in on the bar all night. Quarry Accident An aocident occurred at a quarry yesterday to a large steam derrick. One of the wheels was stripped of cogs, which flew in every direction, the driver escaping by a miracle. There was also another aocident while drying some glyoerine, which exploded, but without doing any damage. DUNEDIN, Juno 26. Snow. Two inches of snow fell last night. The Local Medical Society. At the annual meeting of the Medical Society, Dr. Gillies, tho retiring president, drew attention to the fact that no medical

officer had been appointed in connection with the Local Board of Health recently appointed. He also suggested the propriety of the members of the sooiety delivering lectures on sanitary subjects, say four times a year, and urged the consideration of the question of the establishment of an inebriate retreat. It transpires that tho directors have ordered two more large steamers, named the Wairarapa and Hauroto, te> be built at home.
